TUCSAR BUGLE October 2016 The TUCSAR Bugle is a monthly publication (except during the months of June, July, and August when there will only be a special summer edition published sometime after the National Congress) of the Tucson Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. It is published at the first of the month and will be distributed by the 7 th of each month by email for those members with email and USPS for those without. As we start October I want to remind everyone on the 15 th of Oct is the next MIAP at Marana Veterans cemetery. So our regular meeting will pushed to the following Saturday Oct 22 nd. Be advised there is a gun show taking place at the Shrine Temple. We will be in the same room as always. If you have never gone to a Missing In America Project we will welcome you to join us in Honoring Veterans with a proper burial. Also Veterans Day Nov 11 the Color Guard will be leading the parade again this year. If you want to join us we can use you. We are always looking for younger members to join the Color Guard. SAR Tucson Chapter Veterans Report Last year our chapter started to participate in encouraging donation of time and materials to serve the veterans community. As a part of this we report to the AZ SAR and the National SAR a summary of our activities for the year. The report is The USS Stark Memorial Award. In our Southern AZ Tucson area, we have a very good voluntary services staff based at the hospital. I have attached a donation form. (editor note, see page 4) You would be welcome to bring items to our monthly meetings and I will deliver them. We also have a newly dedicated Fisher House on the hospital grounds. A home away from home for military and veteran families. Please consider monetary donations. Our chapter color guard turns out for many Veteran s events every year we keep track of participants in these events. For more information, please contact me. John F Bird Veterans Chairman Tucson Chapter SAR johnfbird@tds.net 608 444-2396 September Meeting Recap After a summer hiatus the Tucson Chapter started off it's 2016 September meeting with a full agenda: Harper Coleman, Jeff Colman (father & son), Carlton Spain Jr. and Dr. Dale Agner with his father, John Agner, accepting, received new membership certificates; Harper Coleman and Carlton Spain, Jr received War Service Medals and Certificates. Carlton Spain, Jr also received a Flag Certificate for appropriately flying the American Flag at his Bisbee address. Gerry Lawford was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Other awards included Lance Dickinson receiving the Bronze Roger Sherman Medal and Certificate while Dr. Rudy Byrd, Al Niemeyer and John Lyons each received a Bronze Roger Sherman Oak Leaf Cluster. Lance Dickinson gave Ladies Auxiliary Sandy Lawford a U. S. Army Warrant Officer Association Challenge Coin for her participation in one of their events. The final award was a Certificate of Appreciation to the Chapter speaker, Commander Brad Roberson. Commander Roberson gave an excellent talk on the background and terrorist attack against the United States Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67) on 12 October 2000, while it was harbored and being refueled in the Yemeni port of Aden. Seventeen American sailors were killed, and 39 were injured. (Commander Brad Roberson talks about the USS Cole) TUCSAR BUGLE 1

Tucson Chapter Treasurer s Report (The guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67)) Flag Certificate for Carlton Spain (New member awardees Dale Agner (John Agner holds certificate), Jeff Colman, Harper Coleman and Carlton Spain, Jr. with John Niemeyer and Rudy Byrd) A Flag Certificate was awarded at the September 24th Tucson Chapter meeting to Carlton Spain, Jr for properly displaying the American Flag at his Bisbee, AZ home. It should be noted that he was given this award at the same time he became the Tucson Chapter's newest SAR member. (Lance Dickinson, with wife Bette, receives Roger Sherman Medal and Certificate. John Niemeyer and Gerry Lawford awards) (Dr. Byrd and Carlton Spain with his Flag Certificate) State Newsletter Editor and Tucson Chapter Newsletter Editor Positions are Open (Gerard Lawford receives Meritorious Service Medal and Certificate from John Niemeyer) Please volunteer for one of these two positions.
