General Meeting Minutes Graduate Student Senate Monday, September 12, 2016 UC 402/403 6:00-8:00pm CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL [6:03] The regular meeting of the Graduate Student Senate of the University of San Francisco was held in the University Center room 402/403 on Monday, September 12, 2016. Chairperson Erichson called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Vargas, Executive Assistant, recorded minutes for this meeting. Vargas, conducted roll call. OPEN FORUM Presentation Item: Career Services for Graduate Students [6:05-6:35] By: Alex Hochman, Senior Director, Career Services Center Hochman said that even though there is great number of students accessing career counseling, only 12% of counseling is accessed by graduate students. This does not count School of Law and School for Management as they have their own services. Overview of what Career Services Center offers: Linkedin, resume reviews, professional communication, interview skill, career decision making, Dons Helping Dons, Dons Careers. Learn more: www.myusf/careers.edu. Points of collaboration: Graduate Student Summit, October/November career services workshop, spring networking event. Presentation Item: Graduate Student Services and Survey [6:35-6:58] By: Dan McPherson, Director for Graduate Student Services The GSS survey is almost ready to be opened up. Would be great to kick off at Summit. It needs a full University approval, so whatever questions are they should be sent out by tonight. There was about 110 responses last year, which is really low and the responses are important. Additional questions: food services, scholarship and financial aid RECESS [6:58-7:15] Presentation Item: AGSUSF Resolution Writing [7:15-7:29] By: Brittany Sanguma, Assistant Director for Campus Engagement Student Leadership and Engagement AGSUSF resolutions are intended to call for a change or make a formal statement on behalf of GSS. Sanguma went over the difference between an initiative which would need a resolution versus something that needed a vote from the student body (via a referendum). Past AGSUSF Resolutions: Graduation with distinction, referendum for an increase in the AGSUSF Activity Fee Collaborative resolutions: Undergraduate ASUSF Stands Against Microaggressions OLD BUSINESS No old business was conducted.
NEW BUSINESS Action Item: Approval of Appointment of New Officers [7:30-7:27] Christian sent out an interest application from a student to be in the school of Education, Mickey. Christian would like to move to vote, but since there are more applications they could spend some more time thinking about who they would like to appoint. However, these positions have been open since the beginning of the semester. The executive board already decided that Mickey should be the most appropriate to be the position, but there can still be an online vote so the the Senators can learn about the applicants before they vote, also this way they don't have to wait until next meeting, since there are only two more left. And for people who have not been selected for the seat then they can. Close the app at thursday at midnight, then they have go to over and check the applicants and vote on it all day Friday. Presentation Item: Induction of Newly Appointed Officers [7:27-7:30] Priyam Patel, College of Arts and Sciences Representative got inducted. Action Item: Approval of GSS Budget Request: Survey Incentive Prize [7:30-7:35] By: Daniel-Salvatore Giannelli, Vice President of Treasury An incentive for student to take the survey, and they could win an IPad mini with a thank you letter, and this incentive would cost $200. This is in hopes to get more participants in the survey.gandhi moved to approve to increase the budget to get the IPad, Priyam seconded it. The motioned carried: 5 approve, 0 disapprove, 0 abstain. Discussion Item: Graduate Student Summit [7:35-7:40] By: Lauren Feuerborn, Vice President of External Affairs For Graduate Student Summit, Feuerborn would like a lot of digital advertising and word of mouth, not posters that student tend to not read read. There will a photographer for linkedin and people to talk about it, so that they have an incentive to come. They want to do the surveys there if they are done, also the shirts will be there. Senate should be there at 5:50 p.m. Low maintenance work wise. This is the only event put on for all Graduate students by Graduate Students. EXECUTIVE REPORTS [7:40-7:45] Randy Menjivar, President He is working on the Survey. Also he has reached out to the Bart board of directors; to see if the commuters can get a discount. In a meeting on student climate.
Christian Erichson, Vice President of Internal Affairs There are a lot of Senator Vacancies, and they had a new vacancy for VP or Mission. If a senator is interested you need to help find someone to fill your seat. Jot down what you would like in the reports, they need to know the friday before. Daniel-Salvatore Giannelli, Vice President of Treasury Working on the spreadsheets, and the items coming into funding. He is also looking forward to the first finance committee. Lauren Feuerborn, Vice President of External Affairs She says to keep an eye out for the undergraduate senate for the national election watch party. Sarah Souza, Vice President of Mission This position is open. ADVISOR REPORTS Brittany Sanguma, Advisors none SENATOR REPORTS [7:45-7:55] Akshat Patni, Branch Campus Representative Is not present. Priyam Patel and (open seat), College of Arts and Sciences Representatives He is looking the seconded representative, and is trying to get the word across. Romyn Sabatchi and (open seat), School of Education Representatives She met with GSA, under school of education, and they have a rep from each program, they are working on a flyer that distinguishes between them and GSS, for the school of Education. Manan Gandhi and Zae Ramos, School of Management Representatives School of management had a club fair. They want to do cultural events. Active in recruiting especially since Zea is leaving. Laura Holford and Tiffany Wong, School of Nursing and Health Professions Representative The Nursing and Health Professions got a new dean and they are working on more lines of transparency and more lines of communication. Laura is also leaving since this is her last semester. ANNOUNCEMENTS There were no announcements.
