MASON-DIXON MISSISSIPPI POLL APRIL 2018 PART 1 Polling in Mississippi since 1987 FOR RELEASE: Friday, April 20, 2018 Copyright 2018 1

HYDE-SMITH STRONGER THAN MCDANIEL IN RUN-OFF AGAINST ESPY Recently appointed U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith would be the best chance for the Republican Party to hold her Mississippi seat, rather than fellow GOP open primary contender Chris McDaniel. In early run off match-ups, Hyde-Smith has a double-digit advantage (46%-34%) over Mike Espy, the likely Democratic candidate to emerge from the open primary. However, Espy has a narrow lead (42%-40%) over McDaniel. 2018 RUNOFF ELECTION 2018 RUNOFF ELECTION 20% 46% 34% ESPY HYDE-SMITH UNDECIDED 40% 18% 42% ESPY MCDANIEL UNDECIDED As the GOP runoff candidate, Hyde-Smith draws 84% of the Republican vote and also leads Espy 41%-22% among independent voters. Espy draws 79% of the Democratic vote and is supported by 76% of black voters. With McDaniel as Espy s opponent, he only garners 72% among Republicans (12- points less than for Hyde-Smith). McDaniel s lead over Espy among Independents is only 9-points (40%-31%) compared Hyde-Smith s 19-point advantage. Espy increases his share of the GOP from 2% against Hyde-Smith to 12% against McDaniel. He also draws larger numbers in his base, increasing his support among Democrats from 79% to 85% and with African-Americans from 76% to 81%. 2

HOW THE POLL WAS CONDUCTED This poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida from April 12 through April 14, 2018. A total of 625 registered Mississippi voters were interviewed statewide by telephone. All said they vote regularly in state elections. Those interviewed were randomly selected from a phone-matched Mississippi voter registration list that included both land-line and cell phone numbers. Quotas were assigned to reflect voter registration by county. The margin for error, according to standards customarily used by statisticians, is no more than ± 4 percentage points. This means that there is a 95 percent probability that the "true" figure would fall within that range if all voters were surveyed. The margin for error is higher for any subgroup, such as a gender or age grouping. 5
