UNIT PLAN Grade Level: 3 Unit #: 6 Unit Name: 19 th / 20 th Centuries Big Idea/Theme: During the nineteenth and twentieth century, South Carolina experienced major developments in various areas. Culminating Assessment: Create a poster describing a major development that occurred during the 19 th or 20 th century in South Carolina to include: Description. Illustrations. Timeline. (Teachers: Posters could be displayed in the hall as a timeline.) Unit Understanding(s) Students will understand that There were major developments in industry and technology in South Carolina during the nineteenth and twentieth century. State and local Jim Crow laws had an effect on African Americans and South Carolinians as a whole. South Carolina s economy experienced major changes in the twentieth century. There were the causes for emigration from South Carolina and internal migration within South The Great Depression and the New Deal had major effects on daily life in South The Civil Rights movement in South Carolina was characterized by key events and significant effects. Contemporary South Carolinians have rights and responsibilities in the schools, the community, the state, and the nation. Unit Essential Question(s): What were the major developments in industry and technology in South Carolina during the nineteenth and twentieth century? What effect did the Jim Crow laws have on African Americans and South Carolinians as a whole? What changes did South Carolina s economy experience during the twentieth century? What caused emigration from South Carolina and internal migration within South Carolina? What effects did the Great Depression and the New Deal have on daily life in South Carolina? What were the key events and effects of the civil right movement in South Carolina? What rights and responsibilities do South Carolinians have in schools, the community, the state, and the nation today?

Students will know / Students will be able to Summarize developments in industry and technology in South Carolina in the late nineteenth century and the twentieth century such as the telephone and automobile. Describe the developments and how they positively affected South Explain the rise of the textile industry in South Carolina, including conditions that made it possible and the impact it had on the railroad system and the state. Summarize the effect of Jim Crow laws on African Americans and South Identify specific Jim Crow laws and limitations which affected African American s right to vote. Summarize changes in South Carolina s economy in the twentieth century. Identify factors that had a positive and/or negative impact on South Carolina s economy. Discuss trends in the cotton/textile industry over time, such as overproduction or changes in demand due to war. Explain reasons for the growth of tourism in South Carolina Explain the impact of the growth of other industries in twentieth century South Explain the causes and effects of migration on South Compare the migration patterns of African Americans and white South Carolinians. Explain the effects of the Great Depression on people in South Construct cause and effect models of the various ways that South Carolinians were affected by the economic downturn. Explain how and identify examples of New Deal Programs that worked to help relieve some of the suffering of South Carolinians during the Great Depression. Summarize the key events and effects of the Civil Rights Movement in South Explain Briggs v Elliott and its long term impact on public education in South Compare Jim Crow laws and restrictions on voting to the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s. Summarize the individual rights and responsibilities of contemporary South Carolinians as well as the effects of these rights and responsibilities on school, community, state, and nation.

South Carolina Academic Standards: 3-5.1 Summarize the social and economic impact of developments in agriculture, industry and including the creation of Jim Crow laws, the rise and fall of textile markets, the expansion of the railroad 3-5.2 Explain the causes and impact of emigration from South Carolina and internal migration from rural areas to the cities, including discrimination and unemployment, poor sanitation and transportation services, and the lack of electricity and other modern conveniences in rural locations. 3-5.3 Explain the effects of the Great Depression on daily life in South Carolina, including the widespread poverty and unemployment and the efforts of the federal government to create jobs through a variety of New Deal programs. 3-5.4 Summarize the social and economic impact of World War II and the Cold War on South Carolina, including the end of the Great Depression, improvements in modern conveniences, increased opportunities for women and African Americans, and the significance of the opening and eventual closing of military bases. 3-5.5 Summarize the development of economic, political, and social opportunities of African Americans in South Carolina, including the end of Jim Crow laws, the desegregation of schools (Briggs vs. Elliott) and other public facilities, and efforts of African Americans to achieve the right to vote. 3-5.6 Describe the growth of tourism and its impact on the economy of South Carolina, including the development of historic sites, state parks, and resorts and the expanding transportation systems that allow for greater access to our state.
