31 DAILY INVESTMENT UPDATE United States Europe Hong Kong Wall Street gained on Thursday, led by financial shares, after data showed US economic growth was stronger than previously reported last quarter, helped by robust consumer spending, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq set a record closing high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.33%, the S&P 500 gained 0.30%, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.29%. European shares climbed on Thursday, helped by gains among industrials and commodity stocks, while German blue chips came within striking distance of their alltime highs. The pan-european STOXX 600 rose 0.5% to 380.4 points, its highest level in nearly 16 months, while Germany's DAX added 0.4% to 12,256 points, just 1.1% below a record high hit almost two years ago. Hong Kong joined an Asia-wide decline, with no support from southbound inflows and as investors balanced positions on the last day of the month and quarter. The Hang Seng index dropped 0.5%, while the Hong Kong China Enterprises Index lost 0.6% in midmorning trade. Local The JSE closed lower on Thursday, due to a stronger rand, but banks and platinums gained after SARB s decision to keep interest rates on hold. Retail and industrial stocks were weaker on the day. The all share was 0.35% lower and the bluechip top 40 dropped 0.41%. Japan Japanese stocks rose on Friday as upbeat industrial production data and a weak yen supported sentiment, with exporters and tech shares underpinning the broad market in early trade. The Nikkei share average gained 0.5%, and is poised for a similar weekly decline. Rand Precious Metals Oil The rand had plummeted 5% to R13.47/$ by 06h30 on Friday morning, from Thursday s R12.79/$, following President Jacob Zuma s dismissal of Pravin Gordhan as finance minister. Speculation and confirmation of the news of President Zuma s appointment of former home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba as finance minister sent the rand 5% weaker against the euro to R14.39/ from R13.72/ and 5.3% weaker against the pound to R16.82/ from R15.98/. Gold prices edged lower on Friday and were headed for a weekly decline as positive US economic data buoyed the dollar, but uncertainty over upcoming elections in Europe and Britain s exit from the EU capped losses. Spot gold was down 0.2% on the day at $1,240.45/oz at 02h55 GMT, and was set for a similarsized weekly loss, which would be its first weekly decline in three. Oil prices eased on Friday as traders took profits following three days of gains on the expectation that an OPECled crude supply cut that was initially supposed to only last for the first half of the year would be extended. Prices for front-month Brent crude futures, the international benchmark for oil, were at $52.83 a barrel at 01h34 GMT, down 13 cents from their last close.
