Conventions 2008 Script SHOT / TITLE DESCRIPTION 1. 00:00 Animated Open Animated Open 2. 00:05 Stacey Delikat in Front of the White House STACEY ON CAMERA: I M STACEY DELIKAT FOR THE.NEWS. COME JANUARY WE WILL HAVE A NEW PRESIDENT HERE IN THE WHITE HOUSE, BUT BEFORE WE GET TO INAUGURATION DAY THERE IS STILL A LONG WAY TO GO AND A LONG PROCESS. ONE OF THE BIGGEST PARTS OF THAT PROCESS THE CONVENTIONS. 3. 00:17 Senator Hillary Clinton Senator Hillary Clinton D (NY) I m in this race to fight for you. 4. 00:21 Senator Barack Obama Senator Barack Obama D (IL) We could write a new chapter in the American story. 5. 00:25 Senator John McCain Senator John McCain R (AZ) 6. 00:29 00:33 Senate Clinton Campaign Footage Animation showing location of Denver and Minneapolis I will defeat any candidate our friends on the other side nominate. AFTER THE PRIMARIES END IN JUNE THE NEXT MAJOR EVENT ON THE POLITICAL CALANDER WILL BE AT THE END OF THE SUMMER. THAT S WHEN THE DEMOCRATS HOLD THEIR CONVENTION IN DENVER AND THE REPUBLICANS MEET IN MINNEAPOLIS. 1

7. 00:40 Still Democratic debate 00:42 00:44 Still Republican debate Archive Footage Past Conventions 8. 00:54 Animation showing Senator Obama and Senator Clinton side by side. 9. 01:06 Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico on camera. 10. 01:14 Video of Clarence Page and Stacey Delikat talking. 11. 01:21 Clarence Page BEFORE THE 2008 CAMPAIGN STARTED, MANY PEOPLE BELIEVED THAT THE OLD TIME NOMINATING CONVENTIONS HAD OUTLIVED THEIR USEFULNESS. THEY SAID THAT THE CANDIDATES WON THE NOMINATION IN THE PRIMARIES AND THE CONVENTION HAD JUST BECOME A NICE LOCATION FOR SPEECHES. BUT ON THE DEMOCRATIC SITE, THE DRAWN OUT BATTLE BETWEEN DEMOCRATS SENATOR BARRACK OBAMA AND SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON COULD PROVE THEM WRONG. THE LONG CAMPAIGN TO WIN THE NOMINATION HAS LEFT THE PARTY POTENTIALLY SPLIT. Governor Bill Richardson D (NM) I think we need to come together. We are really divided. We're hurting each other. The campaign is negative. And that's going to help John McCain. THAT S WHY CHICAGO TRIBUNE COLUMNIST CLARENCE PAGE SAYS NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS THE CONVENTION WILL BE A CRUICIAL TIME FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. Clarence Page Columnist, The Chicago Tribune 01:30 01:32 01:35 Video of Senator Obama Video of Senator Clinton Clarence Page What s really going to be as important as who wins, who gets nominated, is how will they handle the acceptance of their nomination, how will they handle the person who looses. That s going to be key; otherwise a lot of hurt feelings can lead to people who don t want to support the person who won. 2

12. 01:40 01:48 13. 01:54 02:04 14. 02:09 02:17 15. 02:28 02:33 02:37 Video of Senator John McCain Video of David Bossie David Bossie interviews on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer John McCain at rally John McCain at rally Clarence Page Video of Conventions Video Phil McNamara Video of Senator John Kerry and Senator John Edwards SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN WON ENOUGH DELEGATES BY MARCH TO WIN THE REPUBLICAN NOMINATION, ALTHOUGH HE WAS NOT THE FAVORITE CANDIDATE OF MANY CONVERSVATIVE VOTERS. ONE CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN SAID THE SENATOR HAD A JOB TO DO IF WE WANTED TO WIN THE ELECTION DAVID BOSSIE Citizens United You have conservatives that are still nervous about John McCain s candidacy. You have if the job of the President was solely to run the war on terror; I think he d get my vote overwhelming; I d be very excited about it. But I m nervous about judges, I m nervous about immigration Clarence Page: Columnist, The Chicago Tribune Their big challenge is providing a platform for John McCain to launch his message to the country which is that he has the experience and the independent attitude that the country needs to have a steady course for improvement. CONVENTIONS BRING TOGETHER THOUSANDS OF DELEGATES, PARTY OFFICIALS AND CAMPAIGN WORKERS. PHIL MCNAMARA OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE SAYS IT S AN IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY TO GET THE PARTY S MESSAGE TO THE VOTER. 3

16. 02:43 Phil McNamara DNC Phil McNamara Democratic National Committee 17. 03:01 Graphic with Phil McNamara and Matt Burns The convention is really our four day opportunity to lay out to the American people the vision of the party, of our nominee. How we can how democrats and how our nominee can be better for the country than republicans. MATT BURNS OF THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE HAS THE SAME GOAL FOR HIS PARTY. 18. 03:05 Matt Burns Matt Burns Republican National Committee 19. 03:21 Video of the 2004 Republican Convention We re talking about 15 thousand members of the media covering the conventions. So it s really an opportunity, in addition to the parties business, which is to nominate the candidates. It s also an opportunity to share our values and what our party believes in with a lot of people. THE MESSAGE FROM THE CONVENTIONS IS NOT ALWAYS THE ONE THE PARTY WANTS. THERE ARE OFTEN UNSCRIPTED MOMENTS WHICH CHANGE CAMPAIGNS AND AMERICAN HISTORY. 4

20. 03:30 03:45 Archive photos from 1968 Still photo Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew 21. 03:50 Photos from the 1976 Republican ANTI-VIETNAM WAR DEMONSTRATIONS DOMINATED THE COVERAGE OF THE 1968 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IN CHICAGO. INSIDE THE CONVENTION, DELEGATES WAGED THEIR OWN BATTLE TO CHOOSE THE PARTY S CANDIDATE. VICE PRESIDENT HUBERT HUMPHREY WON THE NOMINATION IN A DIVIDED PARTY AND LOST THE ELECTION TO REPUBLICAN RICHARD NIXON. 22. 04:12 President Gerald Ford at the 1976 Republican Convention 23. 04:24 Video from the 1980 Democratic Convention IN 1976, REPUBLICANS ENTERED THE CONVENTION NOT KNOWING WHICH CANDIDATE, PRESIDENT GERALD FORD OR FORMER CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR RONALD REAGAN, WOULD BE THE NOMINEE. FORD HAD WON MORE DELEGATES AND MORE OF THE POPULAR VOTE BUT NOT BY A BIG ENOUGH MARGIN TO SECURE THE NOMINATION. REAGAN TRIED TO CHANGE THE CONVENTION RULES - BUT WHEN THAT BACKFIRED FORD SURGED AHEAD, CAPTURING THE NOMINATION. President Gerald Ford After the scrimmages of the past few months, it really feels good to have Ron Reagan on the same side of the line. IN 1980, THE DEMOCRATIC RACE WAS MARKED BY BITTERNESS BETWEEN PRIMARY CANDIDATES SENATOR TED KENNEDY AND PRESIDENT CARTER. THAT CARRIED OVER INTO THE CONVENTION. 5

24. 04:33 Video of the 1980 Convention Clarence Page Columnist, The Chicago Tribune 04:40 25. 04:47 04:52 04:57 Acceptance Speech from 2004 Democratic Convention with Balloon drops President George Bush from the 2004 Republican Convention Barbara Simmons President Jimmy Carter was renominated; The TV cameras all caught it. And you could see the hurt feelings right there. And the people who supported Teddy Kennedy didn t really support Jimmy Carter and that contributed to his loosing to Ronald Reagan. ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED MOMENTS AT ANY CONVENTION IS THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE. IT S THE LAST EVENT OF THE CONVENTION, AND THE OFFICIAL BEGINNING OF THE GENERAL CAMPAIGN. BARBARA SIMMONS IS THE EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR FOR THE WASHINGTON TIMES. 26. 05:01 Barbara Simmons Barbara Simmons Editorial Page Editor, The Washington Times 27. 05:16 05:20 Video of Clarence Page at his desk working Convention footage But then it s up to the candidate to remind America or tell American voters for the first time: this is who I am, this is what I stand for, this is what our party stands for and this is what we plan to do for America. CLARENCE PAGE WATCHES CANDIDATES ACCEPTANCE SPEECHES BOTH FOR WHAT IS SAID AND IS NOT SAID. 28. 05:22 Clarence Page Clarence Page Columnist, The Chicago Tribune Is the speech about you or is it about them. Is it about what the party is going to do for you, and your future, and what kind of choice they offer you or is it more about them and what wonderful things they ve done in the past and all and trust us for handling the future? 6

29. 05:40 Video of 2000 Democratic Convention THIS YEAR THE CONVENTIONS WILL BE LATER THAN EVER. BOTH PARTIES WANTED TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE OLYMPICS. 30. 05:48 Matt Burns Matt Burns Republican National Committee This time it will be only 60 days between the end of our convention until election day, so the push is really on at that point. It s pretty exciting. 31. 05:54 Stacey Delikat in front of the White House 32. 06:07 Archive Video of Reporters STACEY ON CAMERA: WHILE THE PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS AND PARTY MEMBERS ARE GETTING READY FOR THE CONVENTIONS SO ARE THE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO WILL BE COVERING THEIR EVERY MOVE BY SOME ESTIMATES, JOURNALISTS COULD OUTNUMBER DELEGATES THREE TO ONE AT EACH OF THIS YEAR S CONVENTIONS. 06:10 06:14 06:16 Graphic of Web pages Lee Banville Lee Banville at desk BUT THE COVERAGE WILL BE VERY DIFFERENT THIS YEAR. FOR THE FIRST TIME BOTH PARTIES EXPECT THERE TO BE MORE BLOGGERS THAN TRADITIONAL MEDIA. LEE BANVILLE IS IN CHARGE OF ONLINE FOR THE NEWSHOUR WITH JIM LEHRER. 7

33. 06:18 06:23 Lee Banville at desk Lee Banville Lee Banville, The Online NewsHour It s something that the parties actually encourage because the bloggers are a little bit more partisan, they might be very pro republican or very pro democrat. 06:33 06:39 06:41 34. 06:43 06:49 06:55 35. 06:59 07:07 Web Sites- Montage Lee Banville Video of Network Logos Video of Network Logos NewsHour Open Stacey and David David Sit Behind the scene images of the media from the 2004 Conventions And so getting those bloggers and those online sites really fired up about what the convention s doing, actually gets their message out to their supporters quicker and actually less analyzed and pondered over, and debated, as it would be in the normal, old mainstream press. THE COMMERCIAL TV NETWORKS STOPPED GAVEL TO GAVEL COVERAGE IN 2000. SOME CABLE CHANNELS STEPPED IN AND THE CONVENTIONS WILL BE BROADCAST START TO FINISH ON PBS BY THE NEWSHOUR WITH JIM LEHRER DAVID SIT OF MACNEIL/LEHRER PRODUCTIONS HAS BEEN PLANNING THE COVERAGE FOR ALMOST A YEAR. David Sit The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer You have to hire a mobile unit, a television truck. You have to have satellite uplink capability. You have to create office space, you know, for probably a hundred people because you are going to have technical people and so literally we are creating a pretty self sufficient small broadcast facility on site. 8

36. 07:17 07:23 Video of TV control room Diagram of Pepsi Center and Xcel Center PLANNING IS CRITICAL IN CONVENTION COVERAGE. THE NEWSHOUR HAS TO MOVE MOST OF ITS OPERATIONS FROM WASHINGTON DC TO DENVER AND THEN MOVE FROM DENVER TO MINNEAPOLIS - ST. PAUL IN TWO DAYS. EVERY DETAIL HAS TO BE WORKED OUT IN ADVANCE 07:27 07:33 37. 07:38 07:42 Video of 2004 convention coverage Video of Chris Dee and Stacey talking Chris Dee Still pictures of plans for the convention. FROM THE LOCATION OF THE SKYBOXES TO THE SHAPE OF THE SET. DIRECTOR OF PRODUCTION CHRIS DEE IS STILL WORKING ON SETTING IT ALL UP. Chris Dee Director of Production, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer You have to take everything into consideration. Special makeup, special sets, special lighting. The skybox, skybox 31 at the DNC, we re approximately in the three o clock position to the podium. At the RNC we have two skyboxes, side by side. They re at approximately the nine o clock position to the podium. This is a simulation with the set walls and the table top, which is very important to 08:01 Chris Dee the NewsHour. The desk is not just a, you know, place to put you paper but it really creates or tries to reduce the boundaries between the guest and the interviewer. 38. 08:12 Video of Conventions 2004 FOR THE THOUSANDS OF JOURNALISTS AND FOR THE VIEWERS AT HOME, THE CONVENTIONS ARE A CHANCE TO WATCH HISTORY. 9

39. 0:8:18 08:20 40. 08:23 Barbara Simmons Video of Conventions 2004 Video from 2004 Conventions Barbara Simmons: This is a living breathing event for America. No other country does what we do. David Sit The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer 08:23 08:29 08:38 08:40 David Sit Video of 2004 Conventions David Sit Video of 2004 Conventions When you are there, you are so focused; you work so hard, you kind of become a little oblivious to what is happening. And then somebody will be giving a great inspiring speech, doesn t matter even which party, and the crowd will be going crazy. And you can feel the electricity in the air and all of the sudden you look around and you realize, this is American, this is democracy. 41. 08:45 Video of 2004 Conventions THIS IS STACEY DELIKAT FOR THE.NEWS. 42. 08:48 Animation ON THE.NEWS WE REPORT STORIES THAT ARE IMPORTANT AND WE BELIEVE WORTH YOUR ATTENTION.
