15 Manuscript Boxes Processed: August 1971 Accession No. 289 The papers of Vincent J. Petitpren were deposited with the Archives of Labor History and Urban Affairs in 1960 and 1970 by Vincent Petitpren. From 1964 thru 1970, Vincent Petitpren served as a member of the Michigan Legislature representing the 37th District and was defeated in his bid for the House in November of 1970. While in office, Mr. Petitpren became chairman of both the College and Universities and State Affairs committees; The former representative was born September 24, 1927 and has resided in Michigan for the majority of his life. Prior to taking office, he taught for seven years at Wayne Memorial High School and later became a Professor in the School of Education at Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Petitpren holds the B.S. and M.A. degrees. He is the recipient of: The Michigan Outstanding Teacher Award of 1961, National Science Foundation scholarship, 1961; two Michigan State scholarship, 1950 and 1951 and U.S. Navy Honorman, 1951. Vincent Petitpren also taught in the Peace Corps training program to prepare young people for teaching in Somolia, Africa; publisher and editor of the "Michigan Teacher;" president, Wayne Federation of Teachers, 1958-60; vice-president, Michigan Federation of Teachers, 1962-64. Mr. Petitpren cultivated a background in politics while serving on the Educational Legislative Committee for Michigan, 1963, later elected trustee of Nankin Township (Westland), 1964 and as a member of the Nankin Township Recreational Council, 1963-65. Additionally, among the clubs and organizations of which he was a member are: American Association of University Professors: Veterans of Foreign Wars; Westland Crisis Club; Pi Kappa Delta, Honorary Society; American Red Cross Disaster Committee; Commanders Club of Michigan. The Vincent J. Petitpren Collection covers the period from 1964 to 1970.
