THE NEW DEAL I. FDR s New Deal focused on the three R s A. Relief: helping the American people survive the depression B. Reform: solving the problems that led to the depression C. Recovery: getting the economy moving

NEW DEAL FIXES BANKS I. FDR s first order of business was to fix the broken banking system II. One day after taking office, FDR declared a bank holiday III. Congress passed the Emergency Banking Relief Act, which allowed the Treasury Department to inspect banks A. Good banks were reopened; bad banks remained closed

AMERICANS GAIN CONFIDENCE IN BANKS I. FDR then passed the Glass-Steagall Act which established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation II. The FDIC insured account holders and set strict standards for banks to follow A. FDIC ensures that Americans money will not just vanish like it did in 1929 (people trust the banks) B. If banks close people get their money back (insurance)

FIXING THE STOCK MARKET & FARMS I. Federal Securities Act: required stock info to be accurate and truthful A. Created the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to regulate the stock market (keep it from crashing) B. Fixed the stock market II. PUBLIC WORKS ADMINISTRATION I. The NIRA created the PWA Public Works Administration II. The PWA provided jobs building schools, bridges, roads and other projects A. Good for people

FEDERAL HOUSING AUTHORITY I. FHA Federal Housing Administration provided loans, mortgages and repairs II. FHA tried to solve the homelessness problem the U.S.A. faced during the Great Depression

FEDERAL EMERGENCY RELIEF ADMINISTRATION I. FERA Federal Emergency Relief Agency provided millions of dollars in direct relief to the neediest Americans A. Somewhat like welfare II. Americans were able to get money to purchase basic necessities to survive the depression

SUPREME COURT & THE NEW DEAL I. Many people were very critical of the New Deal including the Supreme Court A. Some believed the New Deal did too much à others believed it did too little II. The Supreme Court struck down the NIRA and the AAA as unconstitutional III. The SCOTUS believed it gave too much power to the federal government IV. The SCOTUS believed the New Deal was violating the Constitution

FDR CONTROLS THE SUPREME COURT I. During the 1930 s FDR appointed 7 new judges to the Supreme Court A. All of his appointments supported the New Deal II. These judges allowed FDR s New Deal programs to continue
