Background Over the past decades, Somalia has suffered recurring drought and famine that have destroyed the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. Currently, (2017), Somalia is on the brink of starvation as half of its 12 million population are in need of food assistance. There has not been any rain in the last three years. Due to prolonged drought and lack of proper functioning institutions at local level, millions of livestock, which is the main source of livelihood died and now a looming famine is threatening the lives of the people. In 2011, Somalia suffered a devastating famine, which killed a staggering 250,000 people, majority of whom were children. The response to that crisis was slow and the international community did not act on prior warnings by the United Nations. Now there is fear that the country may slip back to the 2011 famine. During the month March, it is reported that over hundred people died from hunger in just two days. Huge numbers of people often die as international aid response takes long to reach the people. IKHLAAS FOUNDATION aims to bridge that gap by mobilising Somali diaspora to save lives during emergencies and build resilience through development projects. WHO WE ARE IKHLAAS FOUNDATION is a non-profit, non-partisan emergency and development organisation working to help change the lives of the vulnerable people in Somalia. IKHLAS FOUNDATION was founded in 2014 by a group of young Somali media and humanitarian professionals. Our head office is located in London where it is registered as a charity limited by guarantee in England and Wales (no 1157838). We have three operational offices in Somalia. Where we work We work all over Somalia including Somaliland, Puntland and south central regions. During emergencies, we respond where there is need

WHAT WE DO Emergency relief: Ikhlaas foundation has been providing emergency relief assistance including food distribution and water trucking to displaced people in Somalia. We have reached thousands of families across many parts of Somalia including south-central, Puntland and Somaliland. In the last three months, we distributed tons of food rations including rice, oil, dates and powdered milk to those affected by the drought throughout Somalia. Development Schools/Orphanage Centres: As part of its development programs, Ikhlaas foundation is currently running two Schools for the orphans in Kismayo and Baledweyn where about 300 students benefit. Wells: Ikhlaas Foundation successfully dug three wells in Baledweyn, Hiiran region to help families access clean water. Due to overcrowding in IDP camps and lack of enough clean water, people turn to drinking contaminated water often resulting in waterborne diseases. We hope these wells will not only provide a drinking water but also reduce the risk of the spread of diseases. Donors Our approach is different and unique in the way we mobilise resources to respond to such emergencies, we solely depend on Somali diaspora contribution to reach out to the people. We mobilise through Somali televisions and social media platforms to raise awareness. Donations from well-wishers are immediately channelled to those in need via our operational offices and local partners in Somalia. It is fast and efficient. However, we are open to partner with conventional donors in the humanitarian industry to deliver aid to people in Somalia.
