Name Study Guide: The French Revolution and Napoleon Essential Understanding In France there was a vast gap between how the rich and the poor lived. The ideas of the Enlightenment and French participation in the American Revolution influenced the French people to view their government in new ways. They overthrew the absolute monarchy, and a new government was established. The French Revolution left a powerful legacy for world history: secular society, nationalism, and democratic ideas. Napoleon s attempt to unify Europe under French domination was unsuccessful. The Congress of Vienna attempted to restore Europe as it had been before the French Revolution and Napoleonic Latin American Independence: The ideas and examples of the American and French Revolutions influenced the people of Latin America to establish independent nations. Independence came to French, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies. Toussaint L Ouverture leads a successful revolution in Haiti.
