The Ohio Country Bulletin The Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Spring 2013 Newsletter In This Issue 2 Bylaw Changes 3 New Compatriots 3 Slate of Officers 2013-14 4-5 Around the State 6-7 Annual State Conference Agenda & Registration MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Reflections on Service www.ohssar.org The Ohio Society and its twenty-two chapters is truly a dedicated fraternal organization committed to service and preservation of the American Spirit. Our membership at the end of 2012 was reported at 1,663 before reconciliation. Ohio was the sixth largest state Society and Western Reserve Society was the single largest chapter in the nation. That number is up over the previous year in part to National s commitment to a four week turnaround time. It is also due to a committed membership willing to work on applications and complete the hard details. At the national congress Ohio had eleven members awarded the Liberty Medal, which is awarded for completing ten or more new membership applications. Our youth contestants came from across the state and represented themselves well in national competition. For the first time the elementary poster contest named an Ohio contestant the national winner. Our community outreach stretched across the entire state. For the eighteenth year the Ohio Society was award the Admiral Furlong Streamer for its chapters participation in presenting the American Flag Certificates to businesses and individuals who properly fly the flag. It was a real pleasure to recognize the Terminal Tower in Downtown Cleveland. A group of us met the Chuck Long who has posted the colors atop the 772 foot Terminal Tower for the last four years. He takes the elevator to the 42nd floor, climbing the steps of the last ten floors to then hand over hand climb the 40 foot ladder to the flag platform. Continued on page 3)

Article XXVI, Meetings: Section 6. Email Notice. Any written notice required under these Regulations may be delivered by use of electronic mail transmission to the intended recipients by providing an email transmission to the intended recipients last known email address provided to the Secretary of the Ohio Society. This shall be in addition to other forms of notification by U.S. Mail and or telephone connection. Article XXIII, Financial: Section 7. Records Retention and Destruction Policy. OHSSAR must maintain books and records to show complies with tax rules. Article XXIII, Financial: Section 8. Whistleblower Policy. Establishment of OHSSAR Compliance Officer, Reporting of Concerns, Handling of reported violations, Confidentiality, and Statement of no Organizational Retaliation. Article XXIII, Financial: Section 9. Conflict of Interest and Establishment of Organizational Conduct. Sections 7,8, and 9 are recommended with wording from the National Society Chancellor General. To be in compliance with federal legislation known as Sarbane-Oxley, non-profits, like the Ohio Society are required to formally state policies and procedures to demonstrate compliance with all federal tax laws. Application Procedures: An application must be submitted on designated watermarked acid-free legal paper issued by the National Society. A copy of said application on bond paper will accompany application with one set of proper documents to the state registrar. The state registrar will forward the formal application and documents to national, while maintaining the copy of the application. Once the application is approved by national the State Registrar may destroy the copy of application. (This policy is recommended to reduce application costs and provide precise instruction to the registrar. Only the checked record copy maintained by national constitutes a valid proof the untouched application does not. The copy is maintained by the registrar until all questions and verifications are answered to national office satisfaction.) The Membership of the State Society shall vote upon the acceptance of said additions at the Spring Meeting on Saturday, April 27, 2013 in Dublin, Ohio. A favorable vote by at least two-thirds of the members present shall be necessary for the adoption of any amendment or procedures. 2

(Continued from page 1) Our service to the national society continues to surprise. We have over ten members serving on national committees and many of them as chairmen. In the last year Paul Wilke served on the national executive committee while Tim Ward served as chair of the Genealogy committee. Tony Robinson, Elwin Spray and Dan Haas all serve on the Eagle Scout Committee. Val Wilke and Betty Franklin have continued to serve on the national Ladies Auxiliary Committee. And at Spring Leadership Troy Bailey was awarded the Lafayette Medal for Volunteer Service to the National Society. Our memorials and grave markings are visible ways for Ohio communities to remember their American founding roots. The annual remembrance of the unknown patriot at Fort Laurens included wreath memorials from four National Society Officers. Also presenting wreaths were representatives of Indiana and Pennsylvania as well as fifteen Chapters of the Ohio Society. Our Veterans have taken a front row seat with the World War II Patriot Certificates. Dozens of Ohio SAR members have been recognized for their military service in the 1941-1945 conflict. In addition many of our members have been active participants in the Honor Flight Program which has flown thousands of Ohioan to Washington DC to see the World War II memorial. As I close out my year of service as your State Society President I wish to thank the hundreds of members I met who demonstrated that the Ohio Society continues to Honor, Preserve and Promote America s Revolutionary Heritage.
