- 3 - CL/189/16-P.2 ANNEX II COMMUNICATION ADDRESSED TO THE PRESIDENTS AND MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT BY MRS. N. ALI ASSEGAF, MP, MEMBER OF THE INDONESIAN INTER-PARLIAMENTARY GROUP Jakarta, 26 September 2011 Dear Mr. President, dear Madam President, Dear members of parliament, I am writing to you to confirm my candidature for the office of President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the term 2011 to 2014 in a bid to succeed the current President and a good friend of mine, Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab, who has been very successful in making the IPU become a more robust and widely recognized organization. I humbly submit my candidature to serve as President of the IPU, encouraged and driven by a vision of a more prestigious IPU that is able to wield greater influence on the dynamics of world politics. As the apex of the world s parliamentary organizations, the IPU must continue to strengthen cooperation among parliamentarians and strive to be a strong and strategic visionary partner of the United Nations with a view to creating a safer, more peaceful and more prosperous world. Having presided over meetings of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians and the Asia-Pacific Group, I am confident that the deep insights I have gained will help me usher the IPU into a new era of universalism, dynamism and effectiveness. Moreover, I am also a strong proponent of women s rights and an advocate of the Millennium Development Goals. Through my various activities within the IPU, I have earned the confidence and trust of my fellow parliamentarians from the various geopolitical groups, which I value. I bring with me core values of integrity and consistency and would be very grateful if that trust could be further translated into firm support for my candidature. It is my hope that my candidature will create a positive precedent for women s leadership and, with your confidence and support, that we can work together to strengthen the commitment and concrete contributions of the IPU to implementing the organization s Strategy for 2012-2017. Thank you. Yours sincerely, (signed) Nurhayati ALI ASSEGAF, MP (Mrs.) Member of the Indonesian Inter-Parliamentary Group CURRICULUM VITAE

- 4 - CL/189/16-P.2 ANNEX III of Mrs. Nurhayati ALI ASSEGAF, MP Member of the Indonesian Inter-Parliamentary Group Personal data - Born in Solo on 17 July 1963 - Married, has two daughters, two sons, and one grandson. Current and past posts She is currently President of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Vice-Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia. A member of the House of Representatives since 2004, she was re-elected in 2009. During her first term (2004-2009), Mrs. Ali Assegaf was appointed special adviser to the First Lady of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Mrs. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. In addition to these duties, as a strong proponent of women s empowerment and gender issues, she also hosted and directed the television programme "Women s Point of View" on national TV (TVRI). Previously (1998-2004), Mrs. Ali Assegaf had been Managing Director of Assegaf & Partners Ltd., a corporate finance consulting firm and, before that, an Associate of Winarto Soemarto & Associates (1993-1998). Her early international activism started during her university years as a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) at Los Angeles City College, USA. She later became a member of the Meguro International Friendship Association (MIFA) in Tokyo, Japan, and National Representative of the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE). That experience, along with her strong commitment to political and social issues, prompted Mrs. Ali Assegaf to become a patron and founder of a number of institutions, including the Nurhayati Ali Assegaf Centre for Democracy and think-tanks dealing with issues relating to youth, women s and children s rights, democracy, and education. In 2003, she joined the Democratic Party, and soon became active in several areas. She served as campaign manager, head of public relations and went on to become Deputy Secretary-General of the party and Head of the Foreign Affairs Department. Parliamentary career In the course of her parliamentary career since 2004, Mrs. Ali Assegaf has been involved in a number of Commissions in the Indonesian House of Representatives, notably Commission VI on Trade, Industry, Investment, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, State Enterprises, and National Standardization; and Commission I on Defence, Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, Communication and Information. Currently, she is Chairperson of the Indonesian branch of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-Indonesia) and Chair of the Working Group on the MDGs, as well as Vice-Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation. She is also the Focal Point of the Indonesian House of Representatives for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

IPU Activities - 5 - CL/189/16-P.2 ANNEX III Since joining the Indonesian delegation to IPU Assemblies and as First Vice-President of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians, Mrs. Ali Assegaf has been active both as a member and chairperson of drafting committees and other IPU committees, in particular as a member of the Executive Committee and its Subcommittee on Finance. Currently, she is President of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians. Mrs. Ali Assegaf led the Indonesian delegation to the 124 th IPU Assembly in Panama City, Panama, in 2011, and to the 123 rd IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2010. Based on these credentials, and in addition to her experience as a member of the IPU Executive Committee, in particular the Subcommittee on Finance, Mrs. Ali Assegaf envisions that implementation of the IPU Strategy for 2012 2017 will help create a world with better parliaments and stronger democracies. Moreover, she is steadfast in her aim to empower parliamentarians around the world, including by strengthening their personal capacities and helping them honour the noblesse oblige of their role, which, by tradition, is considered one of the nobile officium. Based on that vision, Mrs. Ali Assegaf is determined to achieve her goal of enhancing the IPU s standing in global affairs, as an equal partner both of national governments and of the United Nations, and its involvement in addressing contemporary challenges and creating a better world for all. In so doing, Mrs. Ali Assegaf envisages the need for the IPU to enhance its relations with its constituents and the media in order to play a greater role as a strategic nexus between government, the people they serve and civil society. Furthermore, Mrs. Ali Assegaf envisions the fulfilment of the IPU s raison d être as an international forum that brings together people s representatives and assists them in discharging their honourable duty to serve the people s needs. Therefore, Mrs. Ali Assegaf is of the view that the IPU should be able to play a greater role in matters directly affecting people around the world, namely: sustainable development, gender mainstreaming, youth empowerment, protection of minors, the environment, disaster mitigation, and of course, achievement of the MDGs. Regional and international forums Deeply convinced of the need to develop the international and regional dimensions of parliamentary cooperation, Mrs. Ali Assegaf has played an active part in international and regional forums such as the United Nations, the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA); the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA); the Forum of Asia-Pacific Parliamentarians for Education (FASPPED); and the Parliamentary Union of the Organisation of Islamic Conference Member States (PUOIC). Other activities Mrs. Ali Assegaf has been a speaker at various national, regional and international seminars and workshops on a wide range of issues, including the MDGs, women and children, natural disasters, development, democracy, youth leadership, voluntarism and religious and interfaith issues. A fluent English and Japanese speaker with a fair command of Arabic, Mrs. Ali Assegaf pursued studies in Human Resources Management at STIA Majapahit, in Malang, Indonesia. She went on to study at the University of Indonesia, where she obtained a master s degree in American Studies. After obtaining a PhD in Social and Political Studies at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, she attended the Harvard Kennedy School, USA, where she took a course in Executive Education entitled "Leaders in Development: Managing Change in a Dynamic World" in June 2010. Mrs. Ali Assegaf also holds a diploma from the Medical Faculty of Brawijaya University, Malang, Indonesia, and a diploma in Public Relations from Los Angeles City College.
