Welcome message from the conference chairperson We welcome you to the 1 st Joint Conference of the Association of Schools of Social Work in Africa (ASSWA), the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW, Africa), and the Association of South African Social Work Education Institutions (ASASWEI) to be held in the coastal city of East London in the Eastern Cape, home to our world s icon, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The main theme of the conference Social work and developmental social welfare: Local realities and global transformations and the carefully crafted sub- themes will provide us with wonderful opportunities to engage in rich dialogue and debate around a range of issues, pertinent to the social work profession and to allied disciplines. The conference will seek to understand how we, as an international gathering of social work educators, researchers and practitioners, achieve the following objectives: Debate issues pertinent to social work education, research and practice and developmental social welfare Share experiences, research and best teaching and practice models Identify strategies to respond to the skewed development and inequality that globalisation contributes to Draw on some of the opportunities that globalisation presents Recognise the unique, as well as the commonly shared challenges facing social work educators, researchers and practitioners in different parts of the world Address the challenge of developing locally specific social work theories and models of interventions in the face of prevailing western hegemony Engage with the relationship between the personal and political dimensions of people s lives Maximise the potential of social work to develop local, national and regional resistance to the increasingly intensifying impact of neoliberalism and new managerialism Mobilise the power of local, national and international groups and social movements in the interests of the people whom we work with. We look forward to seeing you in East London 4 7 October 2015. Loads of sharing, sunshine, seaside beauty and South African hospitality not to be missed!
