Kultuur Culture Kirjandus Kaks USA eestlast Inna Feldbach ja Alan Trei tõlkisid lõpuks ometi eesti kirjandusklassika tippteoseks peetava A. H. Tammsaare Tõe ja õiguse esimese köite inglise keelde ja saatsid laiali näidispeatükke nende sõnul vohavast ja taltsutamatust teosest. Keisri hullu autor Jaan Kross on rahvusvaheliselt tuntud. Tõnu Õnnepalu on tõusev täht. See oleks väärt lisand Bratislavas arutluse all olevasse Suurte Raamatute nimekirja. (The Economist, 12.01) Soomes ilmus Andreas Oplatka raamatu Lennart Meri Eestile elatud elu soomekeelne versioon. (TS, 13.03) Literature Two Estonian-Americans, Inna Feldbach and Alan Trei, have finally translated into English the first volume of Truth and Justice, a national classic by A. H. Tammsaare, and have circulated some sample chapters of what they call the sprawling, rambunctious epic. Jaan Kross, the author of The Czar s Madman, is internationally known. Tõnu Õnnepalu is a rising star. But Truth and Justice had not been translated into English until this year. The novel is addictive and, with luck, the publishers will feel the same way. It would be a worthy addition to the Great Books list discussed in Bratislava. (The Economist, 12.01) The Finnish-language version of the book Lennart Meri Eestile elatud elu ( Lennart Meri A Life Lived for Estonia ) by Andreas Oplatka was published in Finland. Despite the fact that Meri wrote a great many texts, he did not write his memoirs. Oplatka s book is based on thorough and detailed interviews and conversations that took place between Meri and Oplatka in the summer of 1997 and the winter of 1998 in Paslepa. The work was published in German in 1999 and in Estonian the following year. Oplatka s work complements well the events that are well-known to Finns through Kulle Raig s book Vikerkaare värvid Lennart Meri elu ( Colours of the Rainbow The Life of Lennart Meri. (TS, 13.03) 78

Need on jutustuse põhjal kirja pandud memuaarid millisest elust! (Kaleva, 13.03) It is difficult to comprehend why it took such a long time to publish a book in Finnish describing the life of Lennart Meri. Finland and the Finns play a large part in the book, and Finns thought of Meri as one of their own politicians. One would have expected Meri s story to be published in Finland right away. The life of the cosmopolitan Estonian summarises everything that was the best and worst in 20 th century Europe. It is a tale of education, the power of culture and the will to live, and of a small nation that got in the way of others; at the same time, it is also about stupidity, oppression, descent and deception. If made-up, such a story would be considered too far-fetched. These are memoirs put down on the basis of a life story and what a life! Ajaloolise tõe otsijatele on see rikkalik allikas. (Kauppalehti, 13.03) The title of the book says it all it is the story of a man who saw at an early stage that in a country which is under the power of another, independence is possible. Although Lennart Meri is the main character of the book, the text is also a guide to the history and fate of the Estonian nation. Although Estonia is or should be Finland s closest neighbour, while reading Meri s memoirs, it seems that in the end we know little of Estonia and its history. Meri s memoirs cover many events and periods, so it is worth reading the book several times. It is a rich source for those seeking the historical truth. (Kauppalehti, 13.03) Göteborgi Raamatu- ja Raamatukogumessi peakülaliseks on Eesti. Alates esimesest messist 1985. aastal on ikka mõnda Põhjala riiki lähemalt tutvustatud: Norra on olnud peakülaliseks kaks, Soome kaks ning Island ja Taani ühe korra. Eelmise aasta peakülaline oli Leedu. Me tahame olla põhjala kultuuri manifestatsioon, ütleb Göteborgi messi tegevjuht Anna Falk. Raamatumessi külastas sellel aastal 105 000 inimest. Järgmise aasta peakülaliseks on Läti. Põhjus, miks viimastel aastatel Balti riigid The main guest at the Göteborg Book and Library Fair is Estonia. Since the first fair in 1985, a Nordic country has been presented in detail every year: Norway has been a guest country twice, Finland also twice, and Iceland and Denmark once each. Last year Lithuania was the guest country. We want to be the public face of Nordic culture, says Anna Falk, executive director of the Göteborg Fair. 105,000 people visited the book fair this year. Latvia has been invited as the guest country for next year. The reason why the Baltic countries 79

2007 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR peakülaliseks on olnud, tuleb sellest, et need riigid polnud kaua aega ligipääsetavad. 15 aasta eest polnud neid lihtne fookusesse seada, (Dagens Nyheter, 27.09; 30.09) have been invited as guests for the past few years is that for a long time these countries were not accessible. It was not easy to focus on them 15 years ago, says Falk (Dagens Nyheter, 27.09; 30.09) Göteborgi messi peakülalise Eesti väljapaneku üheks osaks on üheksa meetri kõrgune must kast, mis sümboliseerib eesti kirjandust ümbritsevat müstikat. Sellest hoolimata näitab suur must kast, et eesti kirjandus on tugev ja elav. Lühidalt öeldes: ta on olemas. Eesti väljapaneku must kast viib võrdluseni lennukites peituva musta kastiga, mis säilitab olulist infot lennuki kohta. (SvD, 27.09; 1.10) A part of the exhibition of the Göteborg Fair guest country, Estonia, is a nine-metre high black box that symbolises the mystery surrounding Estonian literature. Estonian literature is not very well known outside Estonia, but despite this, the large black box shows that Estonian literature is strong and alive. In short, it exists. The black box of the Estonian exhibition resembles the black box found in aeroplanes, which contains important information about the plane. If we compare Estonian culture to an aeroplane, then Estonian language and literature are the black box of culture. The fair was a success for Estonia; there was a great deal of interest in the country s exhibition and the works of many writers sold out. (SvD, 27.09; 1.10) Jaan Krossi romaan Paigallend mõjub lugejale dokumentaaljutustusena 1920. aastatel sündinud Ullo Paerannast. Intervjuu Ulloga visandab lugeja silme ette tema lummava saatuse ning on samal ajal sissejuhatuseks eelkõige sõjaaegse Eesti ajalukku. Kirjandus aitab suuresti aru saada teiste rahvaste täbaratest aegadest. Eestlaste mõistmiseks on raske ette kujutada paremat teejuhti kui Jaan Kross, kelle viimane romaan Paigallend kujutab endast ülevaadet Eesti lähiajaloost. (SvD, 9.10) The novel Paigallend ( Treading Air ) by Jaan Kross seems to readers to tell the documentary story of Ullo Paerand, born in the 1920s. An interview with Ullo sketches his dramatic fate in front of the reader s eyes and also serves as an introduction to Estonia s wartime history. Literature is a great means for understanding the difficult times of other nations. It is difficult to imagine a better guide to understanding Estonians than Jaan Kross, whose last novel Paigallend is an overview of Estonia s recent history. (SvD, 9.10) Kunst Aasta tagasi avatud kunstimuuseum Kumu on edukas. Kadrioru pargi sügavusest kerkib Kumu hiiglasliku kivist, klaasist ja betoonist ehitisena, hämmastava kontrastina neoklassitsistlikele puumajadele ühes vanimas Tallinna pargis. Kuigi uus hoone avati vaid aasta eest, Art The art museum KUMU, which opened a year ago, has proved a great success. At the back of Kadriorg Park rises KUMU, a huge stone, glass and concrete structure, and a dramatic contrast to the neoclassical wooden houses in one of the oldest parks in Tallinn. Although the new building was opened only 80

KULTUUR CULTURE 2007 Eesti kultuuritempel Kumu KUMU, the temple of Estonian culture on Eesti Kunstimuuseumil selja taga ligi sajandipikkune ajalugu, vastne muuseumihoone pidanuks ilmavalgust nägema juba 1936. aastal. Teine maailmasõda ning hilisem Nõukogude okupatsioon paiskasid need plaanid segi. Eesti taasiseseisvumisega taaselustati uue muuseumihoone ehitamise projekt ning 1994. aastal alustati Kumu ehitamist Soome arhitekti Pekka Vapaavuori projekti järgi. Nüüd on esimest korda riigi ajaloos muuseumikülastajal võimalik tutvuda eesti kunstiga alates 18. sajandi lõpust tänapäevani. (Libération, 14.03) a year ago, the Art Museum of Estonia has almost a century of history behind it, and the new museum building should have been constructed back in 1936, but World War II and the Soviet occupation that followed disrupted those plans. When Estonia regained its independence, the new museum building project was revived, and in 1994 the construction of KUMU after the design by Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori began. Now, for the first time in the history of the country, museum visitors can learn about Estonian art from the end of the 18 th century up to modern days. Villu Jaanisoo ansamblit armastavad eriti just väliskülalised, ehk seetõttu, et nii see ruum A small country, but a big museum at KUMU. 200,000 people from all over the world have visited this futuristic structure, and special interest is taken in the Soviet socialist realism exhibition. But what do Stalin, Kaiser Wilhelm, an Estonian peasant, a Baltic- German nobleman and a seagull have in common? All of them have been gathered together in one room, their voices echoing as whispers from the walls and forming a common sea of voices. The ensemble by Villu Jaanisoo is especially popular among foreign visitors, perhaps because this room and the entire 81

2007 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR kui ka kogu maja ühendab ühtseks tervikuks erinevad epohhid, mida Eesti ajaloos on olnud väga palju. Kumu on põhjamaise elegantsi paraadnäide, märk sellest, kuivõrd eestlased on Põhjamaadele orienteeritud. Kumust on lühikese aja jooksul saanud mitmekülgne kultuurikeskus. (TS, 11.07) building join different eras into one integral whole; there have been so very many eras in the history of Estonia. KUMU is an excellent example of Nordic elegance, a sign of how Estonians have a Nordic mindset. (Sonntagsblatt, 11.03) According to KUMU s director, Sirje Helme, the museum has managed to accomplish all its objectives and even more. In a short time, KUMU has become a multi-dimensional cultural centre. Helme feels that it has been a challenge to make people understand the function of the art museum, not only from the point of view of the past, but also of the future. KUMU is divided into two halves, with the permanent displays having their own space in one half, and temporary exhibitions being organised in the modern art gallery in the other. The museum is used as a centre for organising concerts and modern dance performances, and film nights are also held there. Helme says that the museum has to be open and interesting for people of all types and ages. (TS, 11.07) Priit Pärn on riigi rahvusvaheliselt tuntuim kunstnik. Pärna animatsioonid on pälvinud auhindu kogu maailmas, kuid nüüd esitleb Kumu kujutava kunstniku Pärna teosed. Kumu näituse keskmes on Pärna söejoonistused. Priit Pärn hakkas söejoonistusi tegema 1983. aastal, näitusel on eksponeeritud 1988. 2001. aasta looming, kuna algusaastatel Pärn alles harjutas söega joonistamist. Söejoonistused erinevad Pärna arvates täiesti animatsioonist ja karikatuuridest. Ka Pärna karikatuurid on taas esil. Eestis avaldati kogumik Pärnograafia, mis sisaldab kunstniku töid aastatest 1964 2006. (HS, 18.04) Priit Pärn is the most internationally renowned artist in the country. His animation has won awards all over the world, and now KUMU is exhibiting Pärn s work as a visual artist. In the centre of the KUMU exhibition are Pärn s charcoal drawings. Priit Pärn began drawing with charcoal in 1983, but the exhibition shows his creative work from 1988 to 2001, since in the early years Pärn was just learning to draw with charcoal. Pärn believes that charcoal drawings are completely different from animation and caricatures. His caricatures are also exhibited. In Estonia the compendium Pärnograafia was published, containing works by the artist from 1964-2006. (HS, 18.04) Eesti näituste korraldajad ei väldi Venemaad, homoseksuaalsust ega teisi aktuaalseid teemasid. Ars Baltica fototriennaal ja noorte Exhibition organisers in Estonia do not avoid Russia, homosexuality, or other topical themes. The Ars Baltica Photographic Art Triennial and 82

(HS, 15.10) Hea võimalus avastada enda jaoks osakest eesti kultuurist avaneb sel suvel Cagnessur-Mer i linnakeses, kus kolm eesti kunstnikku eksponeerivad kaasaegset ehtekunsti. (Nice Matin, 13.06) the biennial of young artists reflect political, social and economic reality, and discuss these topics critically with, for example, Ars Baltica looking at migration, cultural identity, recent history and nationalism. Similar extensive integral wholes are also discussed in the first young people s biennial, where many artists used humour and irony. The topica lity of the young people s biennial is also shown by the fact that the events that occurred in April are already reflected in the creative work. (HS, 15.10) An excellent opportunity to discover something about Estonian culture will open this summer in the small town of Cagnes-sur-Mer, where three Estonian artists will exhibit modern design jewellery. Kadri Mälk, head of the Estonian Academy of Arts Department of Jewellery and Blacksmithing, is one of the most innovative jewellery designers in Europe. In the clean and elegant lines of her work she produces a magical effect by using silver, white gold, black diamond, carbuncle gemstone, and even rubber. Tanel Veenre exhibits his surrealist sculptural jewellery and Piret Hirv her minimalist blacksmithed broaches. In the three artists, mystery, subtlety and a certain sadness are united into one, which is characteristic of far-away Estonia. Margus Rava, Estonia s ambassador to France, also participated in the opening ceremony of the exhibition, and was hosted by the mayor of Cagnes, Louis Nègre. Cagnes-sur-Mer is saab näha Eesti ehtekunstnike loomingut. (Le Bijoutier, juuli) The northernmost and smallest of the three Baltic States, Estonia, with its many islands, lakes, bogs, and marshes, is a bridge between the East and the West. In Cagnes-sur-Mer, it is the creative work of Estonian design jewellers that is exhibited. The three artists are united by courage of expression, the individuality of their work, and the language of forms. The pieces by Kadri Mälk are metaphysical, Piret Hirv s are figurative, and Tanel Veenre s works are in complete harmony with nature. (Le Bijoutier, July) 83

2007 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR Teater Ooperiaastat jäävad teiste seas märkima kaks suurlavastust. (Opera Now, september-oktoober) Theatre The opera year will be marked by two grand performances among others. The first, an opera by Erkki-Sven Tüür, Wallenberg, surprised audiences with its execution and with its use of new techniques, while the staging of the opera was equally unusual. The famous Russian director Dmitri Bertman could not come to Tallinn to stage the opera after the events in April of this year, but so that the project would not fail, Bertman directed the rehearsals using inter net broadcasts and e-mail. Fortunately the director was able to come to the premiere of Wallenberg, and once again Estonians can be proud of their shining musical talent and modern e-solutions. The other production was the romantic opera Cyrano de Bergerac by Eino Tamberg. Cyrano, considered to be Tamberg s best opera despite being written in 1974 during the oppressive occupation, captivates with its romantic tone and wealth of feeling. Hopefully Tamberg s Cyrano will soon find its way onto the international stage. (Opera Now, September-October) Eesti Draamateater andis Kivirähki Eesti matuse külalisetenduse Soome rahvusteatris Kansallisteatteri ning Soome publik võttis eestlaste huumori hästi vastu. Lisaks sellele on kaks orkestriplaati, mõlemal dirigeerib Paavo Järvi. Klassikalises muusikas on lisaks Pärdile maailmamainega tegijaks tõusmas Erkki-Sven Tüür, kelle ERSO esituses kõlava muusikaga plaadi annab välja Prantsuse muusikafirma Virgin Classics. (TS, 4.02) Paavo Järvist saab 2010. aasta augustis Pariisi sümfooniaorkestri l Orchestre de Paris peadirigent. Järvi on praegu USAs asuva Cincinnati sümfooniaorkestri peadirigent, Bremeni Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie kunstiline juht, Eesti Rahvusliku Sümfooniaorkestri kunstiline nõustaja ja Frankfurdi raadio sümfooniaorkestri dirigent. Paavo Järvi has already successfully led L Orchestre de Paris in the years 2004 and 2006. Known for his interpretations of the music of Jean Sibelius, which are more highly rated by some specialists than those of his father, Paavo Järvi is a creative musician with a diverse repertoire. (Le Monde, 1.06) There is no need to worry that, as the leader of Frankfurt s musical life at the Hessen Radio Symphony Orchestra, Paavo Järvi is going to become a musical organiser and not a musician. This is why he is in demand everywhere. Paavo s father was already a world-famous conductor when Paavo was only a small boy. No wonder that already from an early age he dreamed of following in the same profession. Above all, Paavo Järvi feels that he is Estonia s ambassador in the wider world: I am first and foremost an Estonian artist and I want to introduce my country through music. (FAZ, 4.08) 86

(TS, 12.10) Peeter Simm s film about Georg Ots does not reveal much about Ots personality and his compromises as a leading figure in a totalitarian system. In this film version, Ots is like a Hollywood hero who wows high society, concert hall audiences, and political leaders with an almost English charm. The film does not give any clues as to how the charming baritone, tortured by an alcoholic wife, gained such power, or what the price of his songs was. The film is neither a proper musical nor a moving melodrama, to say nothing of it as a political portrayal of the era. Everyone knows the Saaremaa Valss ( Saaremaa Waltz ), but the singer of the song remained distant even to his own wife. The film about Georg Ots tells of a man whom no-one really got to know properly. This might also explain why the film named after Georg Ots speaks more about his wife Asta. Estonians received the film with 88

(The New York Sun, 14.12) When it comes to national sovereignty, geography is destiny. Estonia is positioned as a gateway between Europe and Russia, which has made the country a doormat for inva ders and a reluctant host to occupiers for centuries. James and Maureen Tusty s film The Singing Revolution takes us through the past 100 years of Estonia s misery under Nazi occupation and Soviet rule until the restoration of independence. The backbone of the film is the Estonian tradition of Laulupidu song festivals, known to the West as peculiar gatherings of hundreds and thousands of singers, but which in fact kept Estonian unity alive through world wars and occupations, helped the people to survive attempts at national assimilation, and gave deeper meaning to a local proverb: He who suffers and is patient will have a long life. (The New York Sun, 14.12) Jalgpall Kui peatreener räägib, et tema meeskond on vastastest sajandijagu maha jäänud, oleks reeglina tegu liialdusega. Eesti jalgpalli Football When a manager speaks of his team being a century behind its opponents, it can usually be assumed he is exaggerating. However, when Jelle Goes points out that England has 100 years more experience than his Estonia team, he is speaking a literal truth. Estonia s first international match was in 1920, a 6-0 defeat to Finland. Estonia played just over 100 more matches but, after an 8-1 defeat to Latvia in August 1942, it would be almost 50 years before they played again. It was not merely that Estonia had been subsumed into the USSR, it was that football in that half-century came to be seen as a symbol of oppression. The rebirth of Estonian football began in 1980 with an exhibition match between 89

2007 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR taassünd algas 1980. aastal näidismatšiga kohaliku televisiooni- ja raadiojaama meeskondade vahel. (The Daily Telegraph, 5.06) teams representing the local television and radio stations. A larger-than-expected crowd turned up, and Estonia s largest anti-soviet demonstration broke out. Rioting followed and, two months later, 40 intellectuals signed a letter protesting the Russification of Estonian society. Recognising football s power as a rally point, the youth coach Roman Ubakivi was prompted to reintroduce football to his homeland. His team, Lõvid Lions enjoyed success in Scandinavian youth tournaments and provided the basis for the Estonia national team in the early nineties. Ubakivi s mantle has been taken up by Aivar Pohlak, who was elected president of the Estonian football federation in March, and is widely regarded as having been the father of the game in the country since independence. He founded Flora Tallinn in 1990 and made them the most successful team in modern Estonian history. In 1996, he brokered an agreement to bring a foreign coach to take charge of the club and the national team. Goes is the third national coach since then. Although there has been talk about letting him go, the path seems to be leading upwards and, with a century to catch up, Goes probably deserves a few more months yet. (The Daily Telegraph, 5.06) Eesti jalgpallimeeskonda tüürib kuulus Taani treener Viggo Jensen, kes on olnud edukas mitmete meeskondade juures. Eestist ei kuule rahvusvahelise jalgpalliga seoses tavaliselt palju ega hakkagi kuulma, sest selle jaoks on Eesti liiga väike jalgpallimaa. Teisalt just seepärast võibki Jensen Balti riigis edu saavutada. (BT, 14.09) The Estonian football team is coached by the famous Danish manager Viggo Jensen, who has been successful with many teams. Normally we do not hear much about Estonia in connection with international football and we won t, because Estonia is a too small a footballing country for that. But then perhaps that is why Jensen managed to become successful in this Baltic country. (BT, 14.09) Üks Eesti koondise väravavahi löödud värav tegi ta kuulsaks tervel Inglismaal. 35-aastane Mart Poom on tuntuim ja armastatuim Eesti jalgpallur. (Sovetskij Sport, 21.03) Võib aru saada, miks eestlased on olnud jalgpallivõistlustel kuulsatele vastasvõitlejatele probleemiks: nende kaitse on tugev. Ja just see omadus on parim relv tulevastes suurtes võitlustes. (Fyens Stiftstidende, 23.08) It is understandable why the Estonians have been a problem for famous opponents at football matches: their defence is strong. The Estonian team shines with creativity, and with the ability to beat resistance and surprise with their game. In the match against Andorra, the emotional power of football was on display.
