While the "meeting" portion of the event was short and informal, the idea was to get in some fun flying and ratings checks for anyone who needed a checkout or refresher. We did that, and more. Although the winds were light, we got in a really nice afternoon of flying and served up a lunch of sub sandwiches slope side interspersed with a swap meet, and TONS of slope head BS'ing. We got a number of check flights done and now there are at least five newly minted qualified pilots ready to ply the lift at our world-class slope site. Congratulations to all of those guys! It was great to see and meet several new members, and it was a real bonus to see and hang out with our friend and Gulls member Dale Gottdank out at the slope. Dale has been doing (and winning) a battle with some health issues for the past year or so, that have kept him away, but with a little help from Mark Wood who lent him his Gentle Lady glider, we got Dale flying again. By far, the best part of my day was seeing Dale and Mark smiling and giggling like kids as they took turns guiding the Gentle Lady up and down the cliff at Torrey. 7 pm at the Automotive Museum at Balboa Park Thanks to everyone who attended. I think the flying site meetings work pretty well, and we will be planning to do more of them in the future. Marty

The name of the program is called Home Town Heroes. The program weekly interviews WW2 vets from around the local community. Col. Thacker has been around modeling for many years and at 95 years young can still be seen at many events around the state. TORREY PINES GULLS NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER EDITION 2013 PAGE 5 Lost Stop Watch A lesson to be learned by Cliff Hunter - September 2013 -TD Contest What not to do!! I was looking for a sailplane that landed off field. My stop watch neck cord was hanging out of my pocket and the cord, caught a scrub branch taking stopwatch out of my pocket. Below is a picture of my stopwatch after I found it retracing my footsteps looking for the sailplane. To prevent this from happening again it is my recommendation that you keep your neck strap or your stopwatch in your pocket securely or around your neck securely. It was a lucky find. I actually thought Arthur M. had taken my watch by mistake, sorry Arthur. I took this picture as a reminder for me to keep my stopwatch more securely on me!
