Public Art Jury Committee 2 December 12, 2012 1. CALL TO ORDER Dennis Nault called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. 2 APPROVAL OF AGENDA 2.1. Approval of the December 12, 2012 Agenda Moved by Allan MacIntyre, seconded by Dennis Nault Resolved that the Agenda for the November 14, 2012 Public Art Jury Committee meeting be as amended as follows: Items 2.1 Change meeting date to December 12, 2012. MOTION CARRIED 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 3.1. Approval of the November 28, 2012 Minutes Moved by Helen Swanson, seconded by Dennis Nault Resolved that the Minutes of the November 28, 2012 Public Art Jury Committee meeting be approved as transcribed. MOTION CARRIED 4. UNIFINISHED BUSINESS 4.1. Art Donation Prairie Geometry Update The committee members discussed the maintenance costs associated with accepting the Prairie Geometry piece as well as the implication associated with accepting artwork which accepting a piece designated as Cultural Property.

Public Art Jury Committee 3 December 12, 2012 Moved by Dennis Nault, seconded by Allan MacIntyre Resolved that the Public Art Jury Committee, after considering current and future maintenance costs associated with the structure, hereby agrees not to accept the donation of the Prairie Geometry piece. 4.2. Street Art/Graffiti Discussion Kristina Őberg presented a video entitled The Hidden Art of Red Deer to the members of the committee. After the presentation, the committee members discussed the definitions of street art versus graffiti, and whether consideration should be given to an amendment to the Community Standards Bylaw as it pertains to the definition of graffiti. ACTION ITEM: Kristina Őberg to meet with staff from the Inspections and Licensing Department to obtain their perspective on this item and have a member of the Inspections and Licensing staff attend the next Public Art Jury Committee meeting to discuss the matter with the Public Art Jury Committee members. 5. NEW BUSINESS 5.1. Re-siting of Francis the Pig Pat Matheson advised the Public Art Jury Committee members that the bronze sculpture of Francis the Pig needs to be-sited from its current location due to environmental reclamation that needs to be carried out on the site. Several potential sites were discussed, including two sites in Riverlands subdivision where two pads already exist. Consideration was given to re-siting the sculpture within the trail system, although Pat Matheson advised that the new location should remain within the downtown core, so as to be contained within the route of the Public Art Walking Tour. ACTION ITEM: Kristina Őberg to conduct research on Francis the Pig to help select a location which is relevant to the history of the sculpture s namesake. Pat Matheson will take photographs of potential sites for the sculpture and present them to the committee at the January, 2013, meeting.

Public Art Jury Committee 4 December 12, 2012 5.2. Public Art Walking Tour Pat Matheson provided the members of the Committee with brochures for the 2013 Centennial Walking Tours as well as walking tour brochures from other Cities as examples of the format for the new Public Art Walking Tour brochures to be prepared. ACTION ITEM: The committee members will review the design examples and provide suggestions for the new Public Art Walking Tour brochures at the January, 2013, meeting. 6. REPORTS 6.1. Public Art Coordinator Report Pat Matheson provided copies of the Public Art Coordinator Report for the months of November and December, and it was accepted as information by members of the committee. 7. NEXT MEETING The next Public Art Jury Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. in the Wapiti meeting room, 2 nd Floor, City Hall. 8. ADJOURNMENT Moved by Allan MacIntyre, seconded by Helen Swanson Resolved that the Public Art Jury Committee meeting of Wednesday, December 12, 2012, be adjourned at 1:22 p.m. MOTION CARRIED Chairperson Committees Coordinator
