Tim Malloy, Assistant Director (203) 645-8043 FOR RELEASE: JUNE 8, 2017 Rubenstein Pat Smith (212) 843-8026 MERKEL CHALLENGES TRUMP AS LEADER OF FREE WORLD, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS; VOTERS OPPOSE GOP HEALTH CARE BILL ALMOST 4-1 Only 46 percent of American voters say President Donald Trump is the leader of the free world, while 29 percent say German Chancellor Angela Merkel now fills that role, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. Another 6 percent say someone else and 19 percent are undecided. President Trump tops Merkel 80 6 percent among Republicans and 47 26 percent among independent voters, with Democrats choosing Merkel 50 22 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. world. American voters say 72 23 percent that the U.S. should be the leader of the free Voters disapprove 60 35 percent of the way Trump is handling foreign policy and disapprove 60 35 percent of the way he is handling relations with European allies. The president s attitude towards NATO allies is too unfriendly, 50 percent of voters say, as 4 percent say he is too friendly and 39 percent say he has the right attitude. A total of 88 percent say it is very important or somewhat important that Trump publicly reaffirm that an attack on any NATO member is an attack on all NATO members. Trump did a bad job on his first foreign trip as president, voters say 51 40 percent. Stick to 'one for all and all for one.' That s the clear message from American voters who want NATO to have our back and vice versa, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. The White House self-review of President Donald Trump s overseas trip clashes with how voters feel about a visit that polarized many and raised questions about who can best be described as leader of the free world. -more-

Quinnipiac University Poll/June 8, 2017 page 2 Americans give their president a less than ringing endorsement. What about the rest of the world? Malloy added. Health Care American voters disapprove 62 17 percent of the Republican health care plan, compared to a 57 20 percent disapproval in a May 25 Quinnipiac University poll. Today, Republicans approve of the health care plan 42 25 percent, as every other listed party, gender, education, age or racial group disapproves by wide margins. Voters oppose 65 30 percent decreasing federal funding for Medicaid. Republicans support a Medicaid cut 49 39 percent, while every other listed group opposes the cut by wide margins. Voters disapprove 66 28 percent of the way Trump is handling health care. Control of House, Senate American voters say 51 39 percent that they would like to see the Democratic Party win control of the House of Representatives. Independent voters are divided as 43 percent want Republican control and 42 percent want Democratic control. By a similar 52 39 percent, voters would like to see Democrats win control of the U.S. Senate. Again, independent voters are divided, with 42 percent for Republicans and 43 percent for Democrats. American voters disapprove 73 19 percent of the job Republicans in Congress are doing and disapprove 63 28 percent of the job Democrats in Congress are doing. Only 29 percent of voters are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the way things are going in the nation today, while 70 percent are somewhat dissatisfied or very dissatisfied. From May 31 June 6, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,361 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
