World War II in Europe officially ended on May 8, 1945. This is known as V-E Day. The Allies were able to defeat the Germans for many reasons. The Germans had to fight on several fronts at the same time. Hitler also made some poor decisions. He underestimated the Soviet Union s ability to fight. The enormous production and economic potential of the United States was another factor. By 1944, the United States was producing twice as much as the Axis powers combined. Allied bombings hurt German production and made oil scarce. The Luftwaffe had no fuel to get off of the ground. Once Germany was defeated, the Allies still had to defeat Japan in the Pacific. As early as May 1942m the Japanese controlled much of Southeast Asia, many Pacific Islands, and the Philippines. Thousands of American prisoners-of-war were killed during the brutal Bataan Death March. Japan s control of the oil fields of the Pacific made it a difficult opponent to overcome. As the United States began its attacks, General Douglas MacArthur began an island hopping campaign. Instead of attacking the Japanese mainland, his objective was to take back one island at a time in an order that Japan would not be able to predict. These islands would later serve as stepping stones for the final goal Japan. By 1944, the United States Navy was blockading Japan and the Army and Air Force were bombing Japanese cities and factories from above. The bloody battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa showed that the Japanese would fight to the death rather than surrender. Some pilots, known as kamikazes, crashed their planes into US warships. As the violence continued, scientists offered a way out. Their research, called the Manhattan Project, had produced an atomic bomb for the US. Understanding that dropping the bomb on the Japanese would save American lives, he decided to use it. On August 6, 1945, a US plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb killed more than 70,000 instantly. Another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. The next day, August 10, Japan surrendered and World war II had come to a close. What was the name for Japanese pilots who went on suicide missions? Find the word objective in the underlined sentence. What do you think it means? Use the clues in the sentence to help you if you are not sure. Recognize Sequences Fill in the blanks below to put the events in order that took place in Japan from Aug 6 to Aug 10, 1945. Aug 6 Aug 9 Aug 10
