July 2012 Volume 1, Issue 7 Summer News from the Basileus Dear Sorors, I hope you had a happy Independence Day Celebration and that you have safe traveling, fun and relaxation on your vacation. If you are going to San Francisco for Boule 2012, I look forward to seeing you there and I wish you safe traveling as well. Thank you Soror Kimberly Myott, Leadership Committee Members and presenters for a great chapter retreat at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thank you sorors for your attendance and active participation! Soror Cydney Taylor, thank you for your facilitation of the SWOT analysis and follow up. We also thank The Metropolitan Museum of Art for allowing us to use the facility and their help in the planning. I have a meeting scheduled with Ms. Donna Williams, the Director of Audience Development at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, on July 17, 2012 to discuss ways that we can use the museum more. If you have any suggestions, please forward to me. Saturday, July 14, 2012 is Tau Omega s Family and Friends Picnic at the Jefferson Park, entrance on 112th Street and First Avenue. Please inform Soror Shannta Badgett (Shanboogie04@yahoo.com or 718-781-8940) of your attendance if you have not done so already or contact her if you have any questions. Don t forget to bring your chairs and additional dishes to compliment the menu as directed by Soror Shannta in a separate email. Additional information will be provided by Soror JoAnne Challenger. I joined in on the Basilei Council Conference Call with the North Atlantic Regional Director on Tuesday night, July 10, 2012. I submitted two questions for the directorate meeting. Madame Regional Director Constance Pizarro made the following comments/ requests: 1. Gathering for the NAR Basilei will be on Saturday, July 21, 2012, from 3 6 p.m. in the Regional Director s suite in the Hilton Hotel. Food will be served and gifts will be given. 2. We are requested to wear our pink and green sweater set on Sunday, July 22, 2012, from 5 7 pm at the Public Meeting. You may keep the sweater set on for the reception. 3. North Atlantic Region Hospitality Suite will be opened Sunday, July 22 nd, and Wednesday, July 25 th, from 8 10 p.m. in the Regional Director s Suite in the Hilton Hotel. Refreshments will be served and a gift will be given. Please bring your Boule Badge which will be marked when you receive your gift. (See attached flyer.) Summer News from the Basileus cont d 4. The North Atlantic Regional Gathering will be on Monday, July 23, 2012, from 9 11 p.m. in the Hilton Hotel. 5. At the N.A. Regional Luncheon on Thursday, July 26 th, we will have a gospel theme, and we are asked to wear our Sunday best and a hat (You do not have to pack and wear a hat if you do not want to). 6. At the N.A. Regional Luncheon, there will be a special raffle of a beautiful purse which costs $425 which one of the vendors will also be selling. The cost of the raffle is to be determined. Tau Omega was well represented at the AKA EAF Salute to Excellence Breakfast on June 23, 2012. Soror Lisa Penzellna was chair of the ticket sales committee. Our nominee Rev. Deacon Rodney Beckford was honored for his non-traditional educational services in the Harlem Community. Deacon Beckford is the Executive Director of the J.P. Kennedy Community Center where we have our monthly chapter meetings. Deacon Beckford was not able to attend due to ordainment services. His daughter received the award for him and his wife stood in for him for the photo. Both daughters were in attendance. I attended the 20 th Anniversary Celebration of Tau Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at the Marina Del Ray in the Bronx on Saturday, June 30, 2012. Again, our own Soror Tanya Kennedy was the mistress of ceremony. It was a great afternoon. Also in attendance were Soror Denise Lynch (a chartering member) and Soror Jennifer Curry. Congratulations Tau Nu Omega! Soror Charisse Marshall travelled to Washington, D.C., to attend the funeral of Mr. William C. Singleton, II, Soror Kimberly Singleton s Dad. She represented the chapter and was there for Soror Kim and carried our messages of sympathy. Rededication is Wednesday, July 25 th (No pants permitted). Pink & Green Day is Thursday, July 26 th. NAR Pink and Green Sweater Set at Public Meeting on Sunday, July 22 nd. Soror Thelma Baxter and I attended the Essence Music Festival, July 4 9, 2012, in New Orleans. On Saturday, July 7 th, during the Power of Our Community forums, Soror Thelma participated in a panel discussion about Helping Our Children Succeed in School along with Dr. Steve Perry, Marianne Jean Baptiste, Vanessa Bush and Sabriya Stukes, moderated by Ryan Smith. As always Soror Thelma represented us well. I just found out that Soror Giovanna Henson and Soror Selena Roker were at the Essence Music Festival also. Soror JoVon Seymore is seeking members for the Obligatory Fundraiser Committee to plan for the 2013 fundraiser. We need your ideas and help. Summer News from the Basileus cont d Sorors I am also looking for someone to co-chair the Technology Committee along with Soror Amanda Butler. Soror Amanda is working on her masters in Atlanta, Georgia and she is willing to continue working with the Committee but as the year progresses her time may be limited. As per notification from Soror Jacquita L. Wright-Henderson, Chairman of the NA Leadership Development, the Standards Committee will be facilitating a webinar to prepare chapters for the upcoming chapter evaluations. All Committee chairs and Executive Committee members should plan to join in on one of the webinars on Wednesday, August 8 th or Thursday, August 9 th, at 9:00 pm. Sign-on information will be forwarded once I receive it. All are welcomed to join in on the webinar. If you have not done so already as per Soror Doris Conner s request, please submit your 2011 documents in the appropriate format at the Exec Retreat, on August 11 th. Soror Rosalyn Graves Wilson will be honored for her community work on Tuesday, July 17th. Reception and awards will be at Coler Hospital from 5 8 p.m. Congratulations Soror Rosalyn! Additionally, the following list of prayer themes will receive our particular focus as we convene each month to pray as a body. Chapter Chaplains will join us by incorporating these themes into their mediation and prayers at their general meetings. During the month of July Sorors in the North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha will be focused on praying FOR: Teachers and administrators and all others who make educational decisions for our youth; Parents to ensure their children are educated academically and biblically.
