46th Legislative District Democrats www.46dems.org ~ facebook.com/46dems ~ @wa46dems June 2017 General Meeting Thursday, June 15th Seattle Mennonite Church 3120 NE 125th St. Seattle, WA 98125 Sign In: Meeting: 6:30pm 7:00pm From the Chair Hi Friends, I wanted to let you know a few details about our June General Meeting, which is happening this Thursday, June 15th, at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be at our usual location, the Seattle Mennonite Church. First, we have a terrific program lined up about the long-term relationship between Democrats and Organized Labor. Our speakers are Lynne Dodson, Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington State Labor Council AFL-CIO, and Richard Burton, State Internal Organizer for the American Federation of Teachers-Washington. We'll cover the evolving composition of organized labor, hear real talk about the perceived disconnect between the Democratic Party and blue-collar workers, and engage in an important conversation about how to strengthen the bonds between our party and workers. Second, we will not be holding a Chair's Election at this meeting. With multiple candidate forums, endorsement meetings, and a legislative vacancy to fill, it's been quite a busy month! I want to give our members time to catch their breath before diving into another election process. As of now, I plan to call for the election of a new chair at our August general meeting. If you're interested in running, give it some thought over the next few weeks and feel free to reach out to me at any time. I hope to see many of you at our June meeting this Thursday! In solidarity, Jesse Piedfort Interim Chair 46th District Democrats P.S. Thanks to those of you who participated in the legislative nominating caucus over the weekend! After nominations and a candidate forum, the PCOs voted to recommend Javier Valdez, Melissa Taylor, and Nigel Herbig to the King County Council for selection. On Tuesday, the Council selected Javier Valdez to fill the appointment. Congratulations to our newest legislator, Representative Javier Valdez! Program Summary Strengthening our Relationship with Labor After the last election, many democrats have been concerned of a disconnect between Organized Labor and the National Democratic Party, which may have served as a leading factor resulting in our loss in the race for President. True, or not, our relationship has changed over time. Organized Labor has evolved quite a bit over the years, too. We have always thought of traditional blue collar manufacturing jobs when we thought of organized labor. This has changed significantly, to include service workers, an exploding segment of our workforce. What is apparent in key counties in states that the Dems lost (MI, OH, PA, WI), is that formerly long-term blue collar workers flipped to Trump, tipping the state totals. In Washington, Grays Harbor County switched for the first time to the GOP. Underemployment and unemployment were often mentioned as key reasons for this switch. As the party continues to determine the factors that led to our loss, we need to address the labor issues that impacted this election in order to regain control of the House and Senate. This month s forum is focused on our long-term relationship with Labor. To address this topic, our speakers for June 15 will be: Lynne Dodson, the Secretary-Treasurer of Washington State Labor Council-AFL-CIO, and first woman ever elected as an executive officer of the Labor Council; and Richard Burton, State Internal Organizer for the American Federation of Teachers-Washington. 5

Congratulations Javier Valdez Wow! It has been a busy couple of weeks for the 46th LD. From endorsement meetings to forums to special appointments, 46th District Democrats have been buzzing around with a calendar full of important events. One amazing thing that has come from it is our newest legislator State Representative Javier Valdez, who was officially appointed and sworn in on June 12th by the King County Council. After Jessyn Farrell s resignation as our state representative to fully pursue her race for Mayor of Seattle, a special appointment meeting to fill the vacancy took place on June 10th. The district was blessed to have EIGHT(!) extremely qualified and professional candidates running for the appointment, which was decided by elected and appointed PCOs on a ranked first through third basis. After two forums and countless phone calls, the ranked choices were as follows: Javier Valdez was first, Melissa Taylor was second, and Nigel Herbig was third. Interviews conducted by the King County Council were held for consideration of all three candidates, and at the end, the Council affirmed the PCOs choice of Valdez. Please take a moment to congratulate the candidates who made the huge choice to run and contribute to the dynamic and in depth discussion of the issues related to our district and state. Those who volunteered their time and energy to contribute in making our district a better place were: Olivier BenHaim, Jill Geary, Nigel Herbig, Laurie Lippold, Lelach Rave, Melissa Taylor, Javier Valdez, and Betsy Walker. 6

Be sure to come to the 46th District Democrats Annual Summer Picnic! Bring your family, neighbors and friends. This is a great way to meet new people and catch up with old friends. Looking forward to seeing you! PCOs: Plan to pick up your walk packets at the picnic or email pco-coordinator@46dems.org to make other arrangements. 7
