AHPBA Page Newsletter 4 of 5 General News Items Arizona HPBA Newsletter Page 3 of 5 Remodeling activity is starting to pick up, and should end 2012 on a positive net according to Hearth & Home enews. Also according to Hearth & Home ENews, the National Retail Federation (NRF) predicts that retail sales will increase this year by 3.4%. Young Guns are a new group of hearth professionals in the industry. They will have a reception at EXPO on Wednesday night, Feb. 29, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS Government Affairs Update: At EXPO this year, there will be a Government affairs update on Fri. 3-2, from 1:00 to 3:00pm. NSPS NSPS is still on track, and nothing has changed lately, but it still could. The final rule will not be out until mid-2013. If anything changes, HPBA will be sure to keep us informed. For more information, contact John Crouch, crouch@hpba.org. DOE RULE HPBA has filed a brief to the US Court of Appeals over the DOE rules on decorative gas fireplaces and gas logs. It will be an ongoing adventure that probably will not be over at the earliest by mid 2012. HPBA will keep us posted. This rule could have a tremendous impact on you if you sell decorative gas fireplaces or gas logs. For more info: Contact Allan Cagnoli (cagnoli@hpba.org) or Ryan Carroll (carroll@hpba.org). CSPC A CSA Working Group has finalized its new language to the CSA Z21.50 and CSAZ21.88 standards for barriers (screens, etc.) to protect children and other at-risk individuals from accidental burns on glass-fronted fireplaces. These changes are going through the review and comment period which will be over on Feb. 22, 2012. For more info contact: Tom Stroud, stroud@hpba.org at Stats Restaurant and Bar. If you are under 40 years of age, and/or have less than 5 years in the hearth, patio, or barbecue business, you are a young gun. So be sure to attend the reception, and get involved. Another issue that CSPC is looking into is firepots and gel fuels, because of numerous recent accidents involving those products. Will keep you informed on what happens there too. NET ZERO HPBA and HPBA Pacific are exploring an Alternative Control Measure (ACM) for the recognition of zone heating in the California Energy Code. An ACM is a process that does not involve waiting for code updates. Also trying to get fireplaces included in the Energy Plus Program currently underway in most Calif. Communities. For more info please contact John Crouch, crouch@hpba.org. or Kaity Van Amersfort, kaity@hpbapacific.org UL127 HPBA has now requested an emergency amendment to the International Code Council s Board of Directors to amend the portion of the 2009 IECC code that requires gasketed doors on all fireplaces to allow UL127 fireplaces not to have gasketed doors. This could be a very serious problem with the safety of UL127 fireplaces because of the excess heat that gasketed glass doors could have these units. For more info please contact Tom Stroud, stroud@hpba.org.

Please let me know if you are interested for the review, exam, or a retest. Membership Update The prices will be $329.00 for AHPBA members, $369.00 for other HPBA affiliate members, $539.00 for nonmembers, and $129.00 for a retest (member price if you have failed an exam in the last 13 months). Azhpba.org I will be sending out invoices in the next couple of weeks for 2012 membership in the Arizona HPBA. Included in the invoice will be the chance to get some specials for On Line Training from HPBEF. Remember for your dues to the AHPBA, you will receive free access to the HPBExpo next year, reduced costs on some education programs that we run, and the biggest impact will be the ongoing HPBA government affairs programs that are fighting for you to make sure that the government doesn t make new rules that will infringe on your abilities to make money in your business. Other benefits for members includes low cost credit card processing fees, business liability insurance, and low cost freight charges through UPS, FedEx, USF, & YRC.
