BRIDGING THE GAP An alternative gap experience in Cambodia Managed by:

WHO Are you drawn towards doing good in the world and want to take time to consider your options? Are you ready to travel, learn and explore but don t yet want to commit to a job or volunteer experience? Have you heard about the possible negative impacts of (volun) tourism and are searching for an ethical and engaging alternative? Are you looking for the knowledge to reflect on yourself as a traveler, change-maker, and a member of a global community? Are you interested in immersing yourself and understanding Cambodian culture, and passionate about getting off the beaten track and connecting with local communities? Is important to you to travel ethically and responsibly, and give back along the way? This experience is designed for those who want the safety, convenience, and the fast-forming friendships that come with a gap style group experience, but are also looking for rich learning opportunities, reflective questions, immersive adventures, and a trip that maximizes positive impact to host communities. Oh, and a bucket load of fun! WHAT A fantastic induction to the stunning and complex country of Cambodia, the development issues it faces and the key players who are making positive changes in their community. By traveling with PEPY Tours you will not only have an immersive and adventurous experience, but you will get the chance to dive into Cambodian history and culture, and also spend time learning about the issues that continue to affect this beautiful country, and indeed our world. By meeting with a diverse range of community members, NGOs, social entrepreneurs, and change-makers, you will be able to explore Cambodian hot topics, discover models of development work and their complexities, and learn about both challenges and stories of success. These learning experiences will be facilitated by PEPY Tours experienced instructors through a combination of readings, group activities, discussions, meetings with local innovators, debates, and reflections. WHERE Cambodia, the Kingdom of Wonder, a place known for its temples and remembered for its people. We ll explore many locations across the country, from well-known sites such as the Angkor UNESCO Park, to community homestays in rural locations off the usual tourist map. Siem Reap Battambang Kratie Sen Monorom Oudong Kampong Cham Phnom Penh Kampot

WHY There are many people excited and passionate about tackling the world s challenges and making a positive change but knowing what to do and how to do it is complicated! Instead of diving straight in to a volunteer trip or development project, we offer a learning trip that has the added benefit of also contributing to good causes around the country. A portion of our fee is channeled directly to our sister NGO PEPY Empowering Youth and into projects and organizations visited on the trip. In this way participants will be able to see how the impact of their journey will last far beyond their time in Cambodia. In addition to this funding support, we encourage you to recognize your ability to effect the positive changes you want to see in the world through the changes you make in your own lives, including the ways you give, travel, live, and work in the future. WHEN This is a sign up tour for individuals looking to join a group. We have scheduled the following departure date: August 22nd, 2016 January 9th, 2017 July 31st, 2017 Trip minimum number of participants: 6 Trip maximum number of participants: 12 Note this 1 month experience can either be an adventure in itself, or could form the start, middle, or end of your own independent travels. I have truly never learned so much on an overseas trip until now and it is so refreshing to know that I have been educated through an ethical and responsible tour operator - Hayley, May 2015

DIVE INTO KHMER CULTURE Throw yourself into local life and learn what makes this fascinating country tick. What do people eat for breakfast? Why do monks wear orange robes? What does jol moi mean? What is the legacy of the Khmer Rouge on modern Cambodia? Find out as you spend a month wrapping your tongue around new words, your mouth around new flavors, and your mind around new stories, superstitions, and ways of life S.21 and the Killing Fields important sites of remembrance and ideal places to learn about Khmer Rouge history Food and cooking classes Khmer cuisine is delicious and diverse, with interesting regional variations. Embracing local food (and learning how to cook it!) is often one of our participants favourite activities Market visits and bartering markets are central to daily life in Cambodia, and taking in the sights, smells, and sounds is a great taste of local life The Temples of Angkor Cambodia s proudest achievement! Exploring these truly magnificent temples is a must Pagodas and monks Buddhism forms an integral part of Cambodian culture for most Khmer people. Students will visit these sacred places, meet monks, and learn about their way of life. There will be an opportunity for a Buddhist blessing for those interested Mastering traditional skills Fishing, basket weaving, playing Khmer instruments and Bokator (Cambodia s traditional martial art) are just some of the skills students may get to try their hand at!

UNDERSTANDING DEVELOPMENT While Cambodia is considered to be a developing country, it is changing quickly. There is large population of young people keen to move on from the traumas of the 20th century to an exciting new future, and many incredible initiatives and individuals focused on creating positive change. This trip will give you a rare opportunity to really dig beneath the surface of what it means to be a developing country ; to explore and understand the complexities of issues like education, environmental conservations, gender issues, and human rights, and most importantly meet the people who are fighting for improvements. Inspiring stuff indeed! Visiting development projects This trip offers the opportunity to explore and understand development projects working on a variety of issues across the country Supporting social enterprise - We believe in providing and advocating responsible tourism. As one of the world s largest industries, travel can play a crucial role in development. You will experience first-hand initiatives established to benefit local communities and the natural environment, by staying at locally owned accommodation and eating at social enterprise restaurants Interviewing change-makers The trip offers a unique opportunity to meet with visionary and inspiring local people who are actively making change in their own communities Reflection, debate and discussion! - Your trip instructors will enable you to process what you have been learning by facilitating lively and engaging discussions throughout the trip

EXPLORING LANDSCAPES You will visit varying landscapes and environments throughout your journey. To connect with the unique beauty of different sites, you can try different activities that get you up close and personal with nature. Below are examples of activities you may take part in during your adventure: Bike rides What better way to explore the countryside and get off the beaten track than on a two-wheeled adventure? On a number of stops along the journey the group will take time to take in their surroundings at the local pace Trekking Eastern Cambodia is geographically quite different from the rest of the country, with a cooler climate and many more hills! By spending a day or two trekking with a local guide, students will also be able to learn more about the minority tribes that live in this area, all of whom are facing many challenges as Cambodia quickly modernises Boat rides Explore mangrove forests and discover inspirational community based ecotourism initiatives to promote environmental best practice and planting programs Elephants Elephant riding is a current hot topic in the travel media; to ride or not to ride? We believe a much more ethical approach to experiencing these beautiful creatures is to see them in a more natural setting, and through the facilitation of experienced conservationists dedicated to their welfare. Learn about elephants in Cambodia, and the challenges facing their habitats

KOH P DAO Staying with a local family (homestay) offers a unique insight into life in rural Cambodia, and the context in which many development projects take place. On the island of Koh P dao you will stay with a local family in groups of 2 or 3. While staying on the island of Koh P dao, you can opt to assist on projects that have been identified by islanders as integral to the development of their small community. This is an opportunity to learn about life in a remote rural area, explore some of the complexities of development work in these areas, and offer to help in a small way. It will also provide insight into a voluntourism model that has been developed in partnership with the community it aims to serve. In the past this has included the following activities. Leveling land Building fences Building animal shelters Building home gardens Planting rice Helping to build rain water collectors Helping to install bio-digesters Helping to build sanitation facilities Most importantly, we will take the time to learn about and critically analyze current models of service to reflect on what it means and how it will impact your life going forward. LEARNING JOURNEY We believe in the power of travel to transform and revitalize. To support you through your own journey of discovery, your trip leader will suggest readings, facilitate discussions, and encourage group reflections.
