Papers, 1966-1976 6 linear feet 6 storage boxes Accession # 221 OCLC # DALNET # The papers of the Washington, D.C. Boycott Office record the activities of the UFW in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. While its papers focus primarily on the grape and lettuce boycotts undertaken by the UFW during this span of time, the Washington, D.C. Boycott Office dealt with all types of legislation and Washingtonarea organizations concerned with the lives of farm workers. In 1972, the Washington, D.C. Boycott Office fell under the direction of Gilbert Padilla, who in 1961 had been associated with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta in the Community Service Association. The trio broke off from the CSO to organize farm workers in the National Farm Workers Association prior to the formation of the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee in 1966. Padilla was elected secretary-treasurer of the United Farm Workers at that labor organization's first constitutional convention in 1973. PLEASE NOTE: Folders are computer-arranged alphabetically in this finding aid, but may actually be dispersed throughout several boxes in the collection. Note carefully the box number for each folder heading. Important subjects in the collection: Boycotts: Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia Farm worker legislation Important correspondents in this collection: Cesar Chavez Gilbert Padilla Ramon Romero Pete Valesco Non-manuscript materials:
