3 Historical note The Iowa Farmers Union (IFU) is a division of the National Farmers Union, established in 1902 and more formally known as the Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of America. The Iowa group was recognized and rechartered in 1957. The IFU is organized into community and county units in over 30 Iowa counties. Members participate in trips to Washington, D.C. to lobby for their interests. The IFU has served as host for foreign farm leaders and has run summer camps for children of members. It also set up and provided, through a contract with the U.S. Department of Labor, an On the Job Training program in the 1960s. The IFU also sponsored many programs aimed at directly benefiting and assisting farmers. Some of these ventures were cooperative in nature, such as the Brokerage Service and the Livestock Commission. The IFU also offered insurance plans to farmers including auto, crop, health, and life insurance policies. Collection description This collection (1916-1994, ) contains records of the Iowa Farmers Union (IFU) including convention and conference materials, correspondence, governing documents, meeting minutes, policy statements, press releases, published materials, and reports. The bulk of the collection dates from the mid-20th century. The IFU was very active in Iowa farm life. Some of these activities are documented in this collection through press releases, publications, and meeting materials. Records from conferences and conventions include programs, addresses, minutes, and resolutions. The collection also contains administrative records of the IFU including correspondence, financial records, governance documents, and membership information. Political activities and policy stances are documented through statements and correspondence. Membership records and materials related to county and local farmers unions are also included in the collection. The collection also contains records closely, though not directly, related to the IFU. These include information about the National Farmers Union, other state farmers unions, and files on topics relevant to the activities of the IFU. An incomplete run of The Iowa Union Farmer (call no. HD1485 I63 I59X), the newspaper of the Iowa Farmers Union, along with other newsletters and materials published by the Iowa Farmers Union can be found in the library catalog. Most of these are available to view in Special Collections.
