The United States covers an area of 3,794,100 square miles. The United States declared independence from Britain in 1776. English is the primary language of the United States; many other languages are also spoken. The United States has a literacy rate of 99%. The population of the United States is 80% white, 15% Hispanic, 13% African American, 4% Asian, 2% Pacific Islander/other, and 1% American Indian. (Note: People of Hispanic origin can be of any race.) The population of the United States is 51% Protestant, 24% Roman Catholic, 15% other/unaffiliated, 4% none, 2% Jewish, 2% Mormon, 1% Buddhist, and 1% Muslim. The U.S. labor force is 1% agriculture, 22% manufacturing, and 77% services. The U.S. GDP per capita is $46,000. The average life expectancy in the United States is 76 years for men and 81 years for women. For each category below, write a generalization that holds true for most of Latin America. list at least three countries as evidence that the generalization is true. describe one country that is an exception to the generalization. How can you use data about demographics and economic activities to describe the level of development in a country? For each indicator below, explain the connection between the indicator and economic development. use the wall matrix to compare the level of development of two countries in Latin America. Include the data in your answer. The first one is done for you as an example. Chile ($14,700) is more developed than Bolivia ($4,700). Life Expectancy Literacy Rate Economic Activities GDP per capita in many European countries is over $40,000. However, GDP per capita in many African countries is below $10,000. Using this information and the wall matrix on Latin America, what generalization can you make about the level of development in Latin America as a region? Write the country names in the appropriate location along the spectrum. On a separate sheet of paper, write a paragraph explaining your rankings. Make sure to use all the different types of data (GDP per capita, literacy rate, life expectancy, and economic activities) in your explanation.
