CITIZENSHIP IN THE NATION BYU Merit Badge PowWow Official Merit Badge Worksheet Scout s Name Instructor s Name Scout s Address City State ZIP Instructions 1) The Scout is to review the merit badge book before the first week of PowWow. 2) Bring this work sheet, paper and pen or pencil each week. 3) Bring a Merit Badge blue card with you on the second week. Requirement Instructions 1) Requirement 2 should be completed prior to the first session of PowWow. (Prior to PowWow, the Scout should also have completed the readings listed in requirement 4 and be prepared to discuss them on the first Saturday.). 2) Requirements 1 and 4 should be passed off during the first Saturday. 3) Requirements 3, 6 and 8 must be completed as homework during the time between the two sessions of PowWow. 4) Requirements 5 and 7 should be completed during the second Saturday. * Due to possible time constraints at the PowWow, certain requirements that were originally planned to be completed in class may need to be completed as homework. Please LISTEN to ALL INSTRUCTIONS in class to be aware of any changes. Requirement 1 Explain what citizenship in the nation means. What does it take to be a good citizen of this country? Discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of a responsible and active American citizen. Requirement 2 Do TWO of the following: Option 1: Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Name of historic landmark or place you visited: Tell your counselor what you learned about the landmark or site and what you found interesting about it.

Option 2: Tour your state capitol building or the U.S. Capitol. Which did you visit? Tell your counselor what you learned about the capitol, its function, and its history. Describe what you learned about the capitol, its function, and the history in the space below. Option 3: Tour a federal facility. Name and location of facility: Tell your counselor and describe in the space below what you saw there. Tell what you learned about the facility s function in the local community and how it serves this nation. Option 4: Choose a national monument that interests you. Using books, brochures, the Internet (with your parent s permission), and other resources, find out more about the monument. Name and location of the monument you have chosen: Tell your counselor and describe here what you learned. Explain why the monument is important to this country s citizens. Requirement 3 Watch the national evening news five days in a row OR read the front page of a major daily newspaper five days in a row.
