UNADOPTED MINUTES IMPERIAL VALLEY COLLEGE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS GOVERNMENT SENATE FORTY-FIFTH ASSEMBLY Monday, March 8, 2010 President Steven Sciaky called the regularly scheduled meeting of the Associated Students Government Senate to order at 1:30 p.m. in the Administration Board Room. PRESENT Jose Casas Mario De La Torre Crystelle Enriquez Carlos Espericueta Jr. Carolina Godoy Ashley Nicole Juarez Brian Phillips VISITORS ADVISOR CLERK APPROVAL OF AGENDA APPROVAL OF MINUTES Daniel Bermudez, IVC Student Luis Lopez, IVC Student Sylvia Castro, IVC Student Mr. Sergio A. Aguilar M/S/C (Ashley Juarez/Brian Phillips) to approve the agenda for Monday, March 8, 2010 as submitted M/S/C (Ashley Juarez/Carolina Godoy) to approve the minutes for the meeting of Monday, March 1, 2010 as amended Corrections: Under Present, remove Brian Phillip s name. Under Parliamentarian, Mr. Lopez stated that the system was down for maintenance. PUBLIC COMMENTS None REPORTS President President Sciaky reminded the Senate of the upcoming committee meetings for this week: College Council will meet today at 2:30 p.m. in the Administration Board Room. President Sciaky, Carlos Espericueta and Brian Phillips are scheduled to attend. Mario De La Torre will no longer attend the College Council meetings; therefore, Calros Espericueta will replace him. President s Cabinet will meet Tuesday, March 9 th at 3:15 p.m. in the Administration Board Room. President Sciaky is scheduled to attend. Senate Vacancies Eleven Senate applications have been approved. A special Senate Election will be held on Wednesday, March 10 th & Thursday, March 11 th. The following applicants have been approved: David A. Armenta Daniel Bermudez Ricardo Cortez Jesús Gallegos Anna Gaytan Rusty Lacsina Luis Lopez Raim Torres Tyler Truesdale Abel Trujillo Andrew Vela President Sciaky stated that there was a special meeting (teleconference) for Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) held on Sunday, March 7 th. On the Agenda under Discussion/Action, the Student Senate Council will discuss and possibly take action on the impeachment of Student Senate for California Community Colleges President Reid E. Milburn. Please contact President Sciaky for further information. Vice President Treasurer Parliamentarian Ashley Juarez stated that the State Wide Day of Action event that was held on Thursday, March 4 th had a good turnout. 300 students received a free t-shirt. Mr. Lopez stated that the current revenue for the ASG budget was an estimate of $133,198.72. The majority of revenue has been supplied by vending machines. Mr. Lopez also disseminated a copy of the ASG budget to all Senators. Carlos Espericueta stated that last week a student from Palm Springs addressed the issue that the campus map on the Spring Schedule did not indicate the location of the restrooms. Mr. Lopez responded that the map was outdated and it was currently being updated. Carlos also stated that the student had questioned about a Car Pool Program at IVC. Carlos did not have an answer; therefore, he referred the student to the Student Affairs Office. Mr. Lopez responded that there is no Car Pool Program on campus as of yet. Carlos Espericueta stated that there was another student that had a conflict understanding the spending of the 32 million for the new building (2700). The student also questioned why the stairs were made of titanium. Carlos referred student to the Student Affairs Office. Mr. Lopez responded that the money for the new building was Bond money and had been approved by the Board of Trustees and the Oversight Committee. 030810 Page 2

Elections Officer Carolina Godoy stated that volunteers are needed to work the Senate Elections on the following dates and times: Wednesday, March 10 th o 8:45am- 4:00pm & 6:30pm-9:00pm Thursday, March 11 th o 8:45am-2:00pm Commissions Activities Mr. Lopez stated that Disability Awareness Day will be held on Tuesday, March 23 rd. He also stated that in the past the ASG sponsored the dance for the kids. Popcorn and beads will be provided to the kids. Saria Cardoza stated that Robert Flynt (DJ) volunteered to make animal balloons for the kids, but the ASG must purchase the balloons. Jose Casas stated that during the Mid-Winter Fair (High School Madness) day the beads were all given away by 6:00pm. Ashley Juarez stated that volunteering at the fair was fun and she would volunteer next year. Affairs Cultural Publicity The Spring Health Fair date has been changed to Thursday, March 18 th in the College Center Oasis room. Free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks will be provided to students that participate in the Health Fair. There will also be a drawing for an ipod Nano. Mr. Lopez stated that for the Cesar Chavez event The Fight in the Fields video had been purchased. Delivery date is March 18 th. Mr. Lopez recommends that Political Science and Spanish Instructors be invited to speak during such event. He also recommends that a $100.00 appreciation gift be extended to the guest speaker. Crystelle Enriquez stated that she had created posters for the upcoming events: Senate Elections (Dated March 10 th & 11 th ) Health Fair that will be held on Thursday, March 18 th Mr. Lopez suggested the purchase of another marquee. He stated that it could be connected to the board located outside building 2100. Information on marquee in that location would also be visible to students in building 2700 (new bldg.). Mr. Lopez will research on purchasing a more affordable marquee for that area. More information will be provided at the next meeting. 030810 Page 3

NEW BUSINESS Charter Form M/S/C (Ashley Juarez/Brian Phillips) to approve the following Charter forms as submitted: Future Leaders President: Ashley Juarez Vice-President: Brian Phillips Secretary: Carlos Espericueta Advisor: Sergio Lopez The Adventure Club President: Daniel Simon Vice-President: Esmeralda Castillo Secretary: Jonathan Castillo Advisor: Paige Lovitt Future Professionals of Imperial Valley President: Lupita Alcala Vice-President: Sarai Zaragoza Secretary: Christian Jimenez Advisor: Lilia Sandoval The following charter form was pulled for further discussion: M/S/C (Ashley Juarez/Brian Phillips) to approve the following Charter forms as submitted: Lamp Lighters Club President: Adrienne Padilla Vice-President: Tomas Garza Secretary: Patricia Zazueta Advisor: Brenda Sue Higgins DISCUSSION: Some discussion followed in regards to the purpose of this club. Mr. Lopez stated that the club fundraises for the LVN nursing students to attend conferences, pay for pinning ceremony, and offset cost for book expenses. Motion carried without further discussion Mr. Lopez stated that last week an email was sent to Club Advisors that have not chartered for two consecutive semesters. According to the ASG Student Handbook: II. CAMPUS STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS (b) Funds left on deposit by a defunct campus student organizations (one which has been 030810 Page 4

dissolved or disbanded for two consecutive semesters) shall be escheated to the Associated Students Government. The Associated Student Government shall not be responsible for the debts or other obligations of any campus student organization. ANNOUNCEMENTS Senators ASG President Advisor ADJOURNMENT No Report President Sciaky stated that last week Mario De La Torre stated his concerns and issues regarding the Senate. President Sciaky also stated that these meetings are not the place for such issues. If anyone has questions or concerns, please feel free to make an appointment with President Sciaky to address the issue. If the issue is still not resolved then you must make an appointment with Mr. Lopez. Mr. Lopez stated that as a professional courtesy as and as organization the ASG has to work together. There is a time and place were clarification for any misunderstanding needs to be addressed.
