The Union Government has signed a Financing Agreement with the World Bank for IDA credit of $63 million for the Tejaswini Socio- Economic Empowerment of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) Project. It is the World Ba k s first project in India solely focused on the welfare of adolescent girls and young women aged between 14 and 24 to complete their secondary level education and provide relevant skills for employment. The armies of India and Oman are scheduled to conduct their second bilateral exercise, Al Nagah-II 2017, in March with a focus on counterterrorism. 9
The Union Government has shifted the responsibility of promoting digital transactions in the country to the Union Ministry of IT and Electronics (MEITY) from the NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog. The Union Government has notified the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017 to prohibit the holding, transferring or receiving of scrapped old Rs.500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes from 31 December, 2016. This law makes possession of more than a certain number of the old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes a criminal offence. 10
An indigenously developed supersonic Advance Area Defence (AAD) interceptor missile was successfully test-fired from launch complex III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island in Balasore, Odisha. The supersonic interceptor missile is capable of destroying any incoming enemy ballistic missile at low altitude. Penguin Random House has won the book i dustry s most coveted contract: a deal to produce the memoirs of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The 19th Round of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Trade Negotiating Committee meetings and other related meetings were held in Hyderabad, Telangana. The RCEP is a regional economic integration agreement amongst the 10 ASEAN countries and its 6 Free Trade Agreements partners- Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Japan and Korea. The Supreme Court has banned the use of 5 heavy metals- lithium, antimony, mercury, arsenic and lead in the manufacturing of firecrackers because the air pollution they cause. 13
The Border Security Force signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to provide skill training to retired and retiring BSF personnel and the population living in the border areas. Climate change may have led to over 59,000 farmer suicides over the last 30 years in India according to a University of California report. The Union Government has launched e-rashtriya Kisan Agri Mandi (e- RaKAM) portal to provide a platform for farmers to sell agricultural produce. e-rakam is a first of its kind initiative that leverages technology to connect farmers from the smallest villages to the biggest markets of the world through internet. The Indian Army has developed Humraaz mobile application through which serving soldiers can track details like postings and promotions. The app will also enable soldiers to view their monthly salary slips, Form 16 and also download them. 14
Parliament has passed the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017 amending the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE), 2009 by extending the deadline for teachers to acquire the prescribed minimum qualifications for appointment. The Rajya Sabha approved it and Lok Sabha had passed it earlier. India and Somalia have signed an agreement for transfer of sentenced prisoners in each other s country. The agreement was signed in New Delhi when So alia s Foreign Minister visited India. The agreement opens a new front for collaboration in anti-piracy operation in Eastern Africa which also surfaced in the meeting. The incidents of piracy originating from Somalia have affected Indian interests in the Indian Ocean region near the Horn of Africa. 15
The Lok Sabha has passed the Central Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu and Kashmir) Bill, 2017 and the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (Extension to Jammu and Kashmir) Bill, 2017. Go er e t s Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has constituted a 10-member committee headed by (retd.) Justice B.N. Srikrishna to identify key data protection issues. It also suggested a Draft Data Protection Bill to address the same issues. 16
