ATMA JAYA CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF INDONESIA SUMMER COURSE PROGRAM Working in Indonesia: People, Business & Regulation July 9-28, 2018 Jakarta, Indonesia Term of Reference EXPLORING EXOTIC JAKARTA: LAW & THE 2018 AJCUI SUMMER ACADEMY: EXPLORING EXOTIC JAKARTA
BACKGROUND Summer Course The summer course Working on Indonesia, People, Business & Regulation is a learning program organized by Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia and will be held in Jakarta from July 9th through July 28 th, 2018. As a collaborative program between the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Psychology, it is expected that this course will apply concepts and knowledge from the two fields in Indonesian business contexts and will eventually provide a better understanding of how theories and practices are connected. The course is initiated by the awareness of the inevitable needs of globalizing business. Global economy and technology have triggered high mobility and diversity within and among organizations. International business expansions and mergers have created international teams whereby people from different cultural backgrounds meet and work together to achieve the shared goals. Engaging in global teams is both beneficial and challenging. While the diversity encounters open opportunities for personal development and professional advancement, it is widely accepted that dealing with people from different cultures is not an easy matter. The field of psychology provides concepts and skills on building awareness in a diverse workplace. Dealing with cross-border business also requires a good understanding of concepts and practices in the field of law. Learning about business law is not simply a matter of the law written in the rules and regulations. It also involves how legal theories and overarching principles of law are taken into considerations in different cases. Indonesia is increasingly appealing in the midst of the dynamic global business. With its steady economic growth, optimistic economic forecast, and large consumer market, Indonesia is currently one of the most attractive countries for foreign investments. Indonesia is fascinatingly a diverse country as it is home to about 350 ethnic groups, 700 regional languages and six official religions as well as a number of traditional beliefs.
Not surprisingly, this pluralistic society serves as an excellent context to understand diversity. Being exposed to Indonesian society and its cultural values and norms is valuable in gaining the understanding of the behavior of Indonesian people and how to work with them. The national economy of Indonesia is an economic democracy, following the principles of community, fair efficiency, sustainability, environmental awareness, independence, and safeguards for a balanced progress and national economic unity. With this background, the Indonesian law, especially its business law is unique as it does not only deal with the regulations, but also the Adat/tribal law. The legal system in Indonesia is the Continental or civil law. It follows the Dutch system. The Dutch colonized Indonesian for about 350 years; and thus, the country's legal system primarily follows the civil law system. In addition, Indonesia has the living law or customary law which has influenced many aspects of the system. Finally, as a Muslim country, the Islamic law is also applied in the part of Marriage law for Muslims people. This Summer Course aims at contextualizing the scientific concepts and practices in the fields of Law and Psychology in Indonesian business and organizations.
