Use the excerpt and your knowledge of social studies to answer the following [Evangelical Christians have] an ambitious agenda: to bring Christian principles to bear on a range of social issues. It is a vision for moral leadership, a form of public influence that is shaped by ethics and faith while also being powerful and respected. In truth, their vision is much less and at the same time significantly more than skeptics and critics think. To the extent that the activities of evangelical leaders point to a cohesive vision, it is not a political or cultural agenda but one grounded in religious commitment. Fundamentally, evangelicals feel compelled to share with others what they believe is the best way to make peace with God. For them, one s relationship with the divine is primary; all other issues are secondary. This is not new, and, in fact, it is a much smaller vision for society, one that involves changing one person at a time. What is unique to the current moment is the number of high-ranking leaders who have experienced that change themselves, either before they rose to power or while in public leadership. For many of them, the evangelical imperative to bring faith into every sphere of one s life means they cannot expunge faith from the way they lead, as some would prefer. In this way, the evangelical vision is sweeping and significantly more comprehensive than outsider observers realize. D. Michael Lindsay, Faith in the Halls of Power, 2007 1 According to the author, how has the evangelical movement influenced politics in the last decades? A Evangelical political leaders have incorporated their faith into the way they lead. B Evangelical political leaders have lost the influence they have had in the decades prior to the 1970s. C Evangelical political leaders believe religious convictions should be separated from political decisions. D Evangelical political leaders introduced religious values for the first time associated with the founding of the nation. 2 How do the actions of Dr. Hector P. Garcia characterize the age of Civil Rights and Conservatism? F His founding of the American G.I. Forum led to expanded rights and liberties for Hispanic Americans. G His introduction of numerous education bills to Congress led to expanded educational opportunities for minorities. Source: www.pbs.org H His long service as leader of the Republican Party in Texas led to an expansion of conservatism in government. J His actions as the U.S. Postmaster General led to greater diversity and recognition of minorities and women on stamps. Page 2
