Sandusky County Sheriff s Office Frequently Asked CCW Questions Carrying Concealed Handgun Permits Q: What is needed to make an original permit application? REQUIRED INFORMATION FOR AN ORIGINAL APPLICATION: 1) Completed application form. Applications for a Carrying Concealed Handgun permits are available at the Sandusky County Sheriff s Office or online at the Ohio Attorney Generals website. 2) Passport size photo attached to application. We can take this photo for a fee of $8.00, or you are welcome to bring a passport size photo in with you. 3) Must be a resident of Ohio for at least forty-five (45) days and a resident of Sandusky County or an adjacent County for thirty (30) days. 4) Must be 21 years of age or older. 5) Must bring driver s license or state issued ID with you. 6) Must provide proof of completion of the required CCW training course (10 hours classroom/2 range). You will be required to sign an affidavit attesting to this completion when you make application. 7) Must attest to having read the Ohio Attorney General s Concealed Carry Law Book. 8) Registration fee of $67.00 cash, personal check, cashier s cash or money order if the applicant has been a resident of Ohio for MORE than five years consecutively. Again, add $8.00 to the Registration fee if we take your photo. 9) Registration fee of $77.00 cash, personal check, cashier s cash or money order if the individual has been a resident of Ohio for LESS than five years. 10) Payment must be made in the form of cash, personal check, cashier s cash or money order. Please make all checks payable to: Sandusky County Sheriff s Office. 11) No refunds will be given if your application is denied at any time for any reason. DO NOT BRING YOUR FIREARM TO THE SHERIFF S OFFICE! Q: How do I renew my Carrying Concealed Handgun Permit? The Ohio Revised Code provides for the renewal of a CCW license no earlier than ninety (90) days prior to the expiration of the license. To renew the CCW license, the applicant must present a completed application. The applicant must also provide that the licensee at one time had a competency certification. A valid license, expired license, or any other previously issued license that has not been revoked is prima-facie evidence that the licensee at one time has a competency certification. The applicant must also have a valid driver s license or state issued ID. The applicant will also be required to submit to fingerprint verification for a background check. The cost of a renewed CCW license is $50 for Ohio residents of more than five (5) years and $60 for Ohio residents who have not lived in Ohio for five (5) years. Upon successful completion of the background check, a new license will be issued with the original license number with a new date of expiration that is five years from the date of the renewal. During the renewal process, the current license (if not past the original expiration date) will remain valid, but must be surrendered to the Sheriff s Office upon issuance of the renewed license. Q: What would disqualify me from obtaining a Carrying Concealed Handgun Permit? 1. If applicant has been CHARGED or UNDER INDICTMENT for: Any felony Any drug offense (felony or misdemeanor) Misdemeanor offense of violence Negligent assault Falsification to obtain carry concealed license Possess a revoked or suspended carry concealed license Including conspiracy, complicity or attempt to commit any of the above offenses 2. If applicant has been CONVICTED or has been adjudicated a delinquent child under the following offenses:

Any felony Drug offense Assault on a peace officer Including conspiracy, complicity, or attempt to commit any of the above offenses 3. Q: What appointment times are available to submit my application and complete my background check? No appointment is necessary. You can walk into the CCW office during the hours of 9:00 AM 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Special arrangements can be made on an individual basis. The CCW office is located in the basement of the Sandusky County Sheriff s Department, 2323 Countryside Drive, Fremont, Ohio 43420. Q: Who is the Sheriff s Office contact person regarding the Concealed Carry Permit? Captain Matthew Bender Email: bender_matt@co.sandusky.oh.us Q: How long will it take before I receive my permit? By law, the Sheriff has forty-five (45) days to respond to an application request. In most instances, where the applicant resides in Sandusky County and all background checks come back immediately, licenses will be issued within a few days. Once permits are complete, you will be notified to pick up your permit in person. We do not mail the completed permits. Q: Which other states does Ohio have a reciprocity agreement with? Ohio law gives the Attorney General the right to negotiate concealed carry handgun reciprocity agreements with other states. Under such agreements, Ohio and other states agree to respect each other s concealed carry laws and recognize each other s permit holders. In assessing whether to enter a reciprocity agreement, the Attorney General must determine if another state s concealed carry law and requirements are substantially comparable to Ohio s. These states are subject to change so check the Attorney Generals website for updates. Q: What section of the Ohio Revised Code governs the application process for Carrying Concealed Handguns?
