Operation Refugee 16-20 June 2016 operation REFUGEE A BIg Thank you T hank you for joining Operation Refugee. It s great that you have picked up this new challenge to raise funds for Syrian refugees in search of safety and a decent life. You will find out what it is like to live on a very limited diet for five days and give friends, family and colleagues a chance to make a donation to assist them. Your efforts will make a difference for families who have nowhere else to turn for help. Refugee families are skipping meals and children work or beg on the streets in order to survive. Most are in debt and have no way out. If we can get enough help to them in Lebanon and Jordan, they won t need to risk the dangerous and uncertain trip to Europe. We cannot take you to meet the refugees themselves. If you met them you would find they are ordinary people facing a bleak future. They need practical support to get through this turbulent time. We want refugees to know that there are people who are willing to help. The money you raise will go to the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees in Jordan and Lebanon. We have been working with them since 1949. Set up to help Palestinian refugees they have expanded their services to assist those who have fled the bitter conflict that is destroying Syria. Working with the refugees, they have set up support groups and training programmes so they can meet their immediate needs. New arrivals get food or coupons, non-food items like kitchen utensils and cleaning materials and sometimes blankets and clothing. DSPR Jordan organises free medical days and educational programmes for women and children. In Lebanon DSPR organises high school students to go to and from Syria to sit exams when refugees leaving are not normally allowed to return to Lebanon. The war in Syria has pushed more than 4 million out of the country and there are few signs of peace. That s why I am glad you are taking part in Operation Refugee. DSPR works with the utmost respect and compassion. We plan to sign up 100 people willing to take the challenge so they can help many more families. If together we raise $40,000 that means more than 500 families will get a month s food rations or DSPR can run 75 training workshops for the leaders of women s support groups. The women meet regularly to share their concerns, for health education and to learn how to support their families. Do read the information in this kit so you know how best to approach the challenge. Let us know how it goes or ask if you have questions. Like you, we are passionate about justice. We believe refugees should be respected and given what they need to survive. Thank you for joining us to make Operation Refugee a lifeline to people who need new hope in a difficult situation. Pauline McKay National Director P.S. By working together we are making more change happen. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter let us know how it s going. 3

4 What is CWS Operation Refugee? Operation Refugee will help more refugees with your support. The challenge is to live on the same rations as a Syrian refugee and raise as much money as you can. We supply you with the rations and you sign up family and friends as sponsors. The rations are based on what a Syrian refugee receives living in a Lebanese refugee camp. Just a small amount of rice, split peas, salt, fish, flour, lentils and oil. What s the Current Situation? Record numbers of people fleeing their homes because of persecution and war have put the spotlight on refugees. Almost 60 million people were registered as refugees in 2014 and all indications are that the 2015 figure will be higher. Many are struggling to survive on reduced rations and in conflict zones. Over 4.8 million people have fled Syria about the same number of people as live in Aotearoa New Zealand. Desperate and in debt, large numbers are joining the exodus to Europe, determined to help the rest of the family. Many of the one million refugees who have made it to Europe since last year come from Syria. Lack of funding means food rations have been cut and fewer services are available to refugees living in border states. With the conflict now in its sixth year Syrian refugees are facing a very bleak future. That s why they need your help. Operation Refugee is a practical way to keep hope alive for families who want a better future. Local Partners bring Hope: In Jordan and Lebanon the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR) of the Middle East Council of Churches is providing vital help to Syrian and Palestinian refugees. Whether food, healthcare, education, rental assistance or support services, DSPR makes sure refugees get what they need. Their way of working integrates families who have been refugees for 60 years and newer arrivals from Syria and eases tensions over the limited help available. At the core of their programmes is a deep respect for people and a commitment to give the assistance as equals. One refugee attending a training programme said, Nobody has ever talked to us like this before. Nobody has brought us together to ask us what we need, what skills we want to learn. Operation Refugee will give refugees assistance, and better skills and support to help them face each day. Nobody has ever talked to us like this before. Nobody has brought us together to ask us what we need, what skills we want to learn.

5 What the money raised will do? 1. Provide food rations and coupons so families can supplement what they get from the United Nations with what they most need. 2. Provide free medical days in Jordan s refugee camps with volunteer medical staff from Jordan s hospitals. 3. Provide forums so children can play, learn and have fun away from the often bleak reality of their daily lives. 4. Provide tuition, training & support for young students in Lebanon. DSPR organises students to return to Syria to sit senior exams in Arabic rather than French as in Lebanese schools. They are helping others attend university and run preschools. The more money we raise will mean more families can get the help they need to survive. $87 $33 $27 will provide a good quality food parcel that will feed a refugee family of 6 for 15 days in Jordan. will enable a woman to attend a vocational training workshop and join a support group in Jordan. will enable a woman to attend a health training workshop, focusing on personal hygiene, specific diseases like hepatitis and tuberculosis, and family nutrition in Jordan. $4412 will enable a young refugee to attend a 9 month training programme in Lebanon in electronics and computer repair so they can earn income for their family. The more money we raise will mean more families can get the help they need to survive.

You won t have time to grow your own vegetables during the week of Operation Refugee, so instead you ll be able to earn some extra ingredients by achieving fundraising goals. The rewards.

What do I do if my Operation Refugee kit doesn t arrive? If you haven t received your kit by 8 June, one week before the event, please call us on 0800 74 73 72 or email cws@cws.org.nz and we ll track it down or send you a new one. If you have received your ration pack and can t do the challenge, encourage a friend to take your place. What if I ve registered and change my mind? If you have registered and find that you can t now participate in the challenge please let us know quickly, with only 100 ration packs available we want to get them to people who can do the challenge.

9 OPERATION REFUGEE GETTING READY GET YOUR RECIPES READY At first glance, it might seem like you ll be eating exactly the same meal three times a day, but there are actually a few different meals you can prepare with these ingredients. You will find recipes guiding you through the ingredients, and the meals you can make. Get familiar with them beforehand, and plan out which days you are going to try each of the ingredients. Talk to other participants and share hints, recipes and ideas. GET SPONSORED EARLY TO EARN FOOD REWARDS Ask your friends and family to sponsor you before Operation Refugee week begins, so you can hit your fundraising goals early and get to use your rewards from the start of the week. This will mean you can try some of the recipes with extra ingredients and will really boost your morale, as well as your taste-buds! PLAN YOUR SOCIAL LIFE AND WORK ACTIVITIES It is worth considering which work and social activities you have planned for the week of 16-20 June. During this you may feel a little more tired than normal or you may not have the extra energy. Pace yourself BOOK IN SOME TREATS Plan some things you will enjoy that aren t related to eating or drinking to keep you motivated throughout the week. Try an evening at the cinema (but watch out for the popcorn!), a visit to a friend or a relaxing day trip. PREPARE FOR LIFE POST OPERATION REFUGEE We know you will have been looking forward to that enticing meal all week, but it s important to err on the side of caution. As our bodies have been deprived of major food groups during this experience, it s important to reintroduce them gradually back into our diets. Although it s hard, that means no immediate or large amounts of bingeing! Especially on things like sugar and alcohol which will pose a shock to our systems. Concentrate on vegetables and then integrate protein back into your diet foods that are packed with the nutrients we have been missing out on. Although it s hard, that means no immediate or large amounts of bingeing! Especially on things like sugar and alcohol which will pose a shock to our systems.

10 OPERATION REFUGEE GETTING READY STAYING SAFE AND LEGAL Keeping yourself safe, and fundraising ethically are both incredibly important. Please make sure you read the guidelines thoroughly to keep safe and legal during Operation Refugee and if you have any questions don t hesitate to call the Operation Refugee team at CWS. By signing up participants fully acknowledge the risks involved and understand the programme is not medically supervised. In taking part, participants hereby waive and release CWS from any and all claims, costs, liability and expense for any injury, whether known, anticipated or unanticipated arising from this voluntary participation. It is not recommended that participants exceed the five day duration of Operation Refugee. If for whatever reason the participant feels ill, they should immediately stop. It is advised that participants consult a doctor before taking part, especially if they have a medical condition, take regular medication or have been ill recently. Drink plenty of water. It is not recommended that you dramatically increase your physical activity levels during the event. If you exercise regularly in normal circumstances, it is recommended that you reduce your amount of physical exertion. It is recommended that pregnant women and young people below the age of 18 do not take part in Operation Refugee as the ration packs do not meet their dietary needs. If you are under 18 you must seek permission from a parent or guardian before registering. Please ensure that you fundraise safely and remember any fundraising event you organize must comply with the relevant health and safety legislation and local government regulations. Keeping yourself safe, and Fundraising ethically are both incredibly important. WHAT IF I FEEL ILL DURING OPERATION REFUGEE? If you feel ill during Operation Refugee, cease participation immediately. Consult a doctor before taking part, especially if you have a medical condition, take regular medication or have been ill recently. What happens if I slip up during the week and break the rules? Can I still continue? The challenge we ve set is to eat the same rations as a refugee from Syria living in Lebanon or Jordon for the full five days, and we re encouraging everyone to aim for this goal. However, if you do slip up and break a rule, make a penalty donation of at least $50 towards your fundraising total. What if I m under 18? You must get your parents consent. We encourage you to share this with your family and make it a family activity. If you register and receive a ration pack we expect you to commit to raise a minimum of $500 for Operation Refugee. What if I register late and I miss out on receiving a food ration? This is the first year of Operation Refugee; we want to keep it small so we have set the limit of 100 ration packs to be sent out. If you miss out, there is no problem in you participating but you will need to buy your own food. Remember to register early for next year. What if I can t eat one of the rations provided or I m vegetarian? No problem. Substitute with an additional ration portion and if you are a vegetarian substitute an extra serving of rice, lentils etc. for the fish. Perhaps you could swap or trade something with a friend.

11 OPERATION REFUGEE GETTING READY PERSONALISING YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE Your friends and family want to hear YOUR story and what you re doing to make a difference, so personalize your page and keep it updated with your progress to give your friends a reason to show their support. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS! Before you ask your friends for their support, lead by example and make the first donation yourself. This will inspire your sponsors and prove your personal commitment to the cause. ADD A PHOTO Did you know that fundraisers who upload a personal photo or video to their page raise more money than those who don t? It s that easy! KEEP YOUR PAGE FRESH Post updates, images and videos in the lead up to, and throughout your Operation Refugee experience and share the link to your fundraising page on Facebook and Twitter to help get the word out and give people a reason to visit your page. Don t forget to #cwsoperationrefugee as you post stories. STRETCH YOUR FUNDRAISING GOAL If you hit your fundraising target or you are less than $100 away from reaching it increase it! If people think you are close to meeting your target they may not donate the $200 they were going to if you are only $75 off your goal! TELL YOUR STORY Make sure you personalise the story at the top of your fundraising page to share your reasons for participating in Operation Refugee. Whether it s because you re passionate about refugee rights, have an interest in the Middle East or want to test your culinary skills! Don t forget to #cwsoperationrefugee as you post stories. www.cwsoperationrefugee.nz

12 OPERATION REFUGEE GETTING READY START A TEAM The team that rations together stays together. There is no better motivator for Operation Refugee than the moral support of your nearest and dearest, and you will really help pick each other up on those low days. So get your friends and family involved! Here are our top team tips. FINDING TEAMMATES Encourage your workmates, or friends from your university or sports team to take part with you so you can share your midnight hunger cravings and lament your caffeine withdrawals. Send personal emails and Facebook messages to people inviting them to join you, and explain why you d like them to join the best team ever (that s yours!). Taking part in Operation Refugee can bring your family or household closer together. Shared conversation around a refugee meal will take your mind off what you are eating. Taking part with your relatives or flatmates is a fantastic and fulfilling experience. OPERATION REFUGEE COOK-OFFS! Share meals and recipes and take it in turns to host meals throughout the week. Sharing your experience with your team will give you lots of support on those long evenings and stop you staring longingly at your fridge! It will also add some variety add some variety if you take it in turns to cook. FUNDRAISING IDEAS FOR YOUR TEAM In addition to asking for sponsorship from your friends and family, you and your teammates could organize fundraising activities together. Think of a few activities that you and your friends would enjoy be it an Operation Refugee dinner, guess the rice grains in the jar, or a Middle East themed movie night. Take a guess at how much each activity is likely to raise and then pick the ones that will help you reach your fundraising target. Put some dates in the diary and off you go! MAKE SOME FUN TEAM T-SHIRTS Don t forget to include your team page link on them. You can sell them to your friends and family for them to show their support with all money raised going to your team challenge. Have a photo take together in your shirts and email it to the local press promoting your team page. Encourage your workmates, or friends from your university or sports team to take part with you so you can share your midnight hunger cravings and lament your caffeine withdrawals.

13 OPERATION REFUGEE GETTING READY SHARE AND GET SPONSORED OUR TOP FUNDRAISING TIPS Family, friends and workmates are the obvious choices to talk to about your participation in Operation Refugee. But think more widely. Think about people at clubs you belong to, schools, church, neighbours, even local businesses and the media. Use posters, flyers, message boards, email and social media to extend your reach. Mention Operation Refugee in your answerphone messages, email signatures, notice boards anywhere you can. Get friends and family to spread the word about your fundraising too they ll be keen to help you get more sponsors. INDIVIDUALISE EVERY EMAIL AND CORRESPONDENCE Especially important when approaching your friends and family because you have an established relationship with them. Grab their attention in the subject line for your email. If you make it exciting or interesting more people will open it and read on. DON T BE SHY! Ask someone face-to-face first for their support (just like you would do with a paper sponsor form) or if you can t see them, speak to them on the phone and tell them what you are doing, it is much harder for them to turn you down. ASK GENEROUS PEOPLE FIRST Ask those closest to you first to sponsor you as they re most likely to say yes, and will be most generous. This means you will have some donations already on the page when others go to the page making it more likely they ll donate and give more themselves. ASK AGAIN Don t be embarrassed to email again, giving people another opportunity to sponsor you. You can update them on how your experience is going, let them know how much you re raised, then put a reminder at the bottom of the email about what you re doing, when, and why. THANK YOUR SPONSORS WITHIN 24 HOURS There s no such thing as thanking them too much! This can be as simple as a Facebook message, phone call or email. operation REFUGEE
