THE BENT TWIG A monthly newsletter of the American Bonsai Association of Sacramento January 2015 Peter Tea featured at our ABAS Meeting Tuesday January 27, 2015 Peter Tea is located in San Jose, and has been involved in the Bonsai community for many years studying primarily under Boon Manakitivitpart initially and later under Mr. Junichiro Tanaka at Aichien Bonsai Garden in Japan. Peter provides many services for your bonsai education and tree improvement efforts. Peter is a member and past president of the Midori Bonsai Club in San Jose. For our Demonstration he is rumored to be styling and teaching us about the Monterey Cypress (Cupressus Macrocarpa) native to California s Monterey Peninsula. This is an unusual bonsai subject that will be raffled at the close of the meeting. Peter posts a bonsai related blog at: http://peterteabonsai.wordpress.com/ For Show and Tell please bring your Cypress, Junipers and Winter Silhouette Trees to share.

OUR BOARD President Dino Pappademos Vice President Renee Seely Treasurer Patti Fletcher Recording Secretary John Cota Corresponding Secretary Mark Mendenhall Members at large Steve Egan and Doc Ward. Tuesday February 24 th, Acer Palmatum (Japanese Maple) Demonstration. Dino has selected a large Japanese Maple to style for the February Demonstration. This is a great tree for bonsai that is relatively easy to care for and does well in the Sacramento climate. A little afternoon shade is usually all that is required to keep these trees in top shape. Annual Holiday Social Event Members of ABAS gathered together on Wednesday December 10 for our annual Holiday Party. We had a great dinner with many good cooks contributing their special dish to the selection. Dino mentioned he had no idea we had so many talented cooks in the club. There was a gift exchange and tree decorating completion to go along with the fellowship and fine dining. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Club News and Announcements: Tom Schaal It is with sadness we announce the passing of member Tom Schaal. Tom was our current Recording Secretary and headed up our Nominations Committee for the 2014 year. Relatively new to Bonsai, Tom collected several fine trees that were to be on our Home Tour this year. A tribute to Tom was held at his home earlier this month. Refreshment Committee We d like to take this opportunity to recognize our Refreshment Committee for their fine work this past year. Michael and Linda McCurdy, Patti Fletcher and Doug Hamby have done a fantastic job securing and preparing our meeting refreshments all year long. Thank you all so much for doing this. Any volunteers for this year? Recording Secretary John Cota has volunteered to take over the Board Position of Recording Secretary following the passing of Tom Schaal. John was a Board Member- At-Large. Anyone interested in filling that position please contact Dino. Dues are Due!! Please help us keep our club active and our quality programs coming by renewing your annual membership at the January meeting. Dues are $40 per family and go directly toward our programs and activities. Treasuer Patti Fletcher will not be at the January meeting so we will be unable to accept Credit Card payments until the February Meeting. The connective App is on her Smartphone. Cash and Checks will be accepted in January. It s Showtime!! Planning for our annual Spring Show is underway. Several lead positions need to be filled to make this a successful event. Please consider where you can help, check your calendars and be prepared to volunteer at the January Meeting.
