President s Corner Cover Photo: Looks like some of our dapper Webfooters! Was it ever stated that all Webfooters are ducks? Aren t frogs and some birds, Webfooters as well? When a lapel pin was created for The Webfooters in the 1990s, there was an image of a frog. We ve all seen the 100-plus year old Oregon Webfoot plates and spoons with the fishing frog. In December, we had a wonderful gathering, over 55 members and friends; it was so good to see so many of our friends, old and new. It was such a treat to see Jocelyn and Edouard and to view the incredible progress he has made with his health. It was really good to see a smiling Steve & Karen Kuryk. Steve is recovering nicely as well. We were also very happy to see some of our folks who experienced power outages during and after the early December storms and we are thankful that none of them experienced serious consequences from the floods and landslides. Our Auction is coming up April 18th at the Rodeway Quality Inn at 9727 NE Sandy Blvd. Preview begins at 3:30, the Banquet begins at 5:00 and the Auction begins at 7:00. We need your quality items for consignment. Contact Glenn Mason or Dusty Schmidt. Our Show runs April 19-20 at the Jackson Armory. Don Van Osdol donated a copy of his recently published 2008 Calendar of Pages from Astoria s Past. The Calendar was sold at silent auction to raise donations to the Club. Don produced an excellent calendar with some awesome views of Astoria through the years. He may have some left for sale. Contact Don for more information about this highly recommended calendar. I received a note to Fellow Webfooters from Honorary Lifetime Member Mona Campbell. She wants us to know she thinks of us and misses her postcards and attending the meetings. Mona says she really enjoys getting The Webfooter and she is so happy to know the Club is thriving. She says: Post card collecting is a great hobby! Member Update It is with sadness we report the passing of Charter Member 13, Robert Potts, who died December 5, 2007 at the age of 91. 2

All froze up in Portland in the winter of 1916 Weather is always a popular subject, especially when it snows. While we don t get snow every year, we can expect a good blanket of snow at least once every 5 to 10 years. Beaumont Cars operate in the snow 5

Board Meeting Minutes The attendees at the December 12, 2007 Webfooters board meeting, held at Elmer s restaurant, were: Mark Moore (President), Tony Roberts (incoming Vice President), Arne Soland (Treasurer), David Sell (outgoing Membership Chair), Steve Bieler (incoming Membership Chair), Brian Hansen (incoming Member-at-Large) and Dave Elston (outgoing Secretary). After a call to order at approximately 6:45 PM, the minutes of the previous meeting were approved as published, after a discussion regarding the format and timing for providing accessibility to the Club s financial information (see discussion below). Financial Report A question was raised asking why the Club s account balances were not printed in the December newsletter. Due to security, the Board agreed that it is prudent to not include the Club s finances on the Club s website, where the colorized version of the monthly newsletter is accessible by Webfooters and by any member of the general public. Tony suggested, and the board voted unanimously for the idea, that a comprehensive financial report be included annually in the January Webfooters newsletter, with the financial data exorcized from the corresponding public/website version. As has always been the case, the financial information of the Club will continue to be open to review by any Club member in good standing wishing to do so. Report of Standing Committees Membership David Sell reported that membership is at 208 Active Members (96 Individual Members, 74 Family Members, 31 Patron Members, 5 Honor Members and 2 Charter Members). Membership stood at 220 in August of 2007. The board greeted with sadness the news of the passing of Robert ( Bob ) Potts, member #13. He is one of the 2 charter members included in the tally above. As there continue to be some misunderstandings regarding renewals and the membership status of various honorary members of the Club, the new board members will need to clarify the issue of longevity of and criteria for granting such memberships. The matter is addressed in the Club Constitution and Bylaws, but qualifications for achieving this status may be needed. Refreshments A sign-up sheet for providing refreshments at the 2008 Saturday Club meetings is available at all regular Club meetings. Please sign on to provide the type of refreshments you would like to see at our gatherings. Reimbursement of up to $25 is available for those contributing this service. Auction/Show Mark passed out a report on the 28th Annual 2008 April Postcard and Paper Show. It showed that dealers have paid for 26 tables to date. (Editor s note: the count is now 31 as of press time.) Brian Hansen will look into the feasibility and costs associated with advertising the Auction and Show on Google and Craigslist. He will also be seeking information on less obscure sites for the annual show (after the 2008 show), in case a change of venue is determined to be of benefit to the future success of the event. (continued next page) 8

Board Meeting Minutes (continued) Business Arising From Previous Meetings Membership Cards Membership cards were available for distribution to each active member at the December Webfooters meeting. Mark reiterated the idea that surplus cards not used for membership will be valuable as Club advertising handouts. Hospitality/Name Tags Mark indicated that he was making up new name tags, all uniformly having the current Club logo, for members to wear at the regular meetings and other Webfooters events. The tie-in of nametag use and personal recognition with the promotion of communication between members and non-members was brought up once again. Mark reiterated the need to find volunteers to take shifts at the hospitality table on Saturday meeting days. Signature Card for Show Account Arne is now an authorized signer on this account. New Business Potluck Arrangements were made amongst the board members for the providing of ham, beverages and other Club provided supplies at the upcoming annual December potluck. Change to Board Meeting Night Those 2008 board members attending the meeting agreed that Monday was an agreeable day for holding future evening board meetings. Audit Committee for 2008 David Sell s name was added to those of Phyllis Palmer and Dave Elston in making up the Audit Committee membership, which is to review the financial accounts of the Club. A thorough audit in March 2008 will be carried out, as the worthiness of conducting this annual procedure was agreed upon by the Board at its March 2007 meeting. Ads in Newsletters or On-Line Arne reported that there have been no members or dealers expressing interest to date in contracting to run a personal business or other appropriately themed advertisement in the monthly newsletter. Brian will look into the possibilities of increasing the prominence and the visibility of the Club through including links to the Webfooters on similar organizations and postcard dealer s websites in return for inclusion of a link to their website on that of the Webfooters. An attempt to nominate David Sell to be a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, a last resort and failed effort at humor by the outgoing Secretary, was thwarted, as the meeting had been adjourned (one minute previous to this suggestion) at 8:27 PM. The next board meeting will be held on January 14, 2008. Respectfully submitted, David Elston, (outgoing and usually friendly) Secretary of The Webfooters Post Card Club. 9
