Washington Library Association Awards Criteria LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP AWARDS Emeritus Membership(s): To recognize outstanding retirees of library services. Criteria for Recipient: Member of WLA; has retired from library service prior to the date of the annual conference; has demonstrated consistent and outstanding service in WLA and has excelled in promoting and providing library service. Honorary Membership(s): To recognize a person who has supported libraries but who is not a library staff member by profession. Criteria for Recipient: Has demonstrated consistent and prolonged support of library service in the state of Washington, and/or promoted legislative action, and/or participated in statewide committee work and other library activities. MERIT AWARDS For Advances in Library Services: To recognize outstanding contributions by an individual(s) who has been instrumental in improving library services. Criteria for Recipient: A member of the Washington Library Association currently employed in the library field in Washington State. Examples of service improvement: Providing service to a previously unserved area or population; providing access to information not previously available. Greatest weight will be given to the personal efforts of the nominee. Each nomination will be appropriately documented with narrative statement and information that supports the nomination. It is not mandatory that the award be given annually. Nominations will be kept on file/considered for two consecutive years. For Outstanding Performance: To recognize individuals who have performed outstanding work for libraries. Criteria for Recipient: Member of Washington Library Association; currently employed in the library field in Washington State. Examples: Public Relations; technical services; rural librarianship; outreach services; support services; facilities; library education; promoting library values. Each nomination will be appropriately documented with narrative statement and information that supports the nomination. It is not mandatory that the award be given annually. Nominations will be kept on file/considered for two consecutive years. The Washington Library Association President has the privilege of making a special Presidents Award at his or her discretion. Examples: For performance in a particularly difficult circumstance; for consistently high performance over a long number of years; for serving as an example for others. Additionally, the WLA Board may from time to time give recognition for special service(s) to the Association.

WASHINGTON LIBRARY FRIENDS, FOUNDATION, & TRUSTEES ASSOCIATION DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS For Trustees, Library Boards, Friends, and Foundations Each year the WLFFTA recognizes the achievements and services of Trustees, Library Boards and Friends of the Library by presenting Distinguished Service Awards for specific accomplishments or for long and faithful service. Members of WLA will be given preference. Awards consider both individual and group achievement. The categories and their criteria are: Trustee Awards: 1. For advancement of library services through the development of sound library policies. 2. For wisdom, sound judgment and creative ideas in instituting library practices which have resulted in improved library services and efficiency. Friends/Foundations Awards: 1. For effective advocacy of the library in the community; bringing its services and possibilities to the attention of the community and its leaders. 2. For interest and contribution in support of library service. Nominations for these awards may be submitted by any WLA member, a Library Board, an individual Trustee, a Friends of the Library group, an individual Friend of the Library, a library foundation or library staff. Each nomination will be appropriately documented with a narrative statement and information that supports the nomination. It is not mandatory that the award be given annually. CAYAS AWARD FOR VISIONARY LIBRARY SERVICE TO YOUTH CAYAS (the Washington Library Association s interest group devoted to children s and young adult services) is seeking nominees for the CAYAS Visionary Award. Nominees should be individuals who are dedicated to excellence in library services to youth-children and/or young adults. Please solicit your institution s library staff, board members and volunteers for suggestions as to who they think should be nominated for this prestigious award. The winner will receive recognition at the annual conference. The CAYAS Award for Visionary Library Service to Youth recognizes individuals who, through their practice and example, provide inspiration and leadership for others who serve children and young adults in libraries. Those eligible to be nominated for this award include staff or volunteers from public, school or special libraries. The work that qualifies an individual for nomination may include cumulated efforts over several years in the field of library service to youth, or may be a singular and exceptional effort that sets new standards for practice. The purpose of the award is to commend the individual who will receive it, and also to appreciate and bring attention to the remarkable and tireless efforts of all individuals who work with young people in libraries. WASHINGTON LIBRARY EMPLOYEES (WALE) OUTSTANDING EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD for Library Employees WALE is seeking nominations of library employee(s) to be considered for the Outstanding Employee of the Year Award. Nominations for this award may be submitted by a Library Board, individual Trustee, Friends of the Library group, individual Friend of the Library, or a library staff member. The criteria for the award are: Nominee is a member of WLA and WALE Interest Group Nominee is a library employee who demonstrates significant contributions or accomplishments in the library field. Nominee must have been active within WALE, working on a committee or providing leadership in some other capacity. Examples: o An innovative project or activity for a specific library in Washington or a o support staff organization. An innovative project or activity (for example: creator of a specialized database or service which can be used by library staff) Projects and activities should directly involve support staff working in libraries or information centers. Projects and activities will be judged according to the degree by which the status and work of support staff are improved or enhanced within the library profession. Nominations will be solicited and accepted from WALE and Washington Library Association members. It is not mandatory that the award be given annually. Candace Morgan Intellectual Freedom Award Recognizing the lifetime contributions of Candace Morgan in support of Intellectual Freedom and the Library Bill of Rights, the Washington Library Association bestows this award in her honor to individuals or groups, who defend, champion, support and/or educate others about Intellectual Freedom in Washington State. The Washington Library Association Awards Committee will administer the Award. SIRS/Proquest provides a $500 honorarium and plaque. The following criteria have been established for choosing a recipient for the Candace Morgan Intellectual Freedom Award: Nominations will be solicited and accepted from Washington Library Association Members. Each nominee may be an individual, a group of individuals, or an organization. The nominee should be engaged in an activity affecting information access in the state of Washington. Each nominee s efforts will have furthered the cause of intellectual freedom in the state.
