It is 2016!!! Beginning a new year gives me mixed emotions as I look back and reflect on what the previous year brought and look ahead with anticipation on what the year will bring to all of us. The past six months have certainly brought so many great things into my life while serving as your President. I spent the end of the 2015 calendar year traveling out to some local Jaycee Chapters, extending support and guidance from the Senate. My visits showed me over and over why I am extremely thankful to my home chapter for giving me the opportunity to be a senator!!! So many of our Jaycee Chapters are doing GREAT things and are committed to the Jaycee belief that Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life!!! With that said, even though our Jaycees are doing great things and building leaders, there is still a tremendous need in many of those chapters for guidance, direction, mentoring and assistance. Simply put, our Jaycees need us. They don t need us to do for them, they need us to guide, mentor and assist them to be the Leaders that they are striving to be!!! If you are interested in knowing of a local chapter that is in need of your Senate knowledge, please reach out to myself or anyone of our E Board and we will point you in the right direction! Moving forward into 2016 there are many wonderful events coming up for all of you to attend. January 7th 10th many of us will be headed south to enjoy time with Senators across the country at the 2016 National JCI Senate Fall Board Meeting in Savannah Georgia. I for one am so excited to be traveling to Savannah as it s been on my bucket list for many years. Then on Friday, January 15th we will gather with many of our Region V fellow Senators for the Pre Post Holiday Party in Ohio!!! Come on out and join us for dinner and socializing at Loma Linda s Restaurant. On Saturday January 16th we will venture back to the Mitten State for our FABULOUS Post Holiday Party at Crystal Gardens in Southgate. This is always a wonderful event as the hustle and bustle of the holidays are behind us as we gather together for a dinner, drinks and dancing with so many of our friends across not only but the Region. February brings us our next Senate Meeting of the Bases Loaded year which will be held during the Jaycees Conference. We will meet on Saturday February 20th at 3pm in Grand Rapids at the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. Come out and join us for Hospitality on Friday and Saturday night with our Hospitality Chair Mr. Ray Russell and his lovely bride Mrs. Edonna Russell assisted by their team of Past President and this years Chaplain, Deb (Ma) Fewless and Past President Patti (with an i ) Rittsma. A GREAT time to be had by all with a fantabulous selection of food and drinks!!! REGION V SPRING FLING, in case you didn t know it, WE ARE HOSTING THIS YEAR!!! Friday, March 18th Sunday, March 20th we will be at the Marriott in Ypsilanti. Registration forms are on our website. Hotel block is available. We look forward to seeing many of you there!!! Fun times to be had for sure!! Please contact Chair Don Mcdurmon or Co Chair COB Gary Bulson if you have any questions regarding the Spring Fling event. Our plan is to hold our 2016-2017 Elections at Spring Fling. We would hold elections on Saturday afternoon following the morning Region V events and prior to dinner. If you are interested in an elected board position, please submit you intent to COV Gary Bulson by January 15th, 2016. Be sure to watch for more information forthcoming in regards to the Elections Meeting. A seemingly far away event (but one that takes many months to plan) that I would also like to mention is the 2016 National JCI Senate Fall Board meeting here in the continued on page 6

January 2016 3 Happy New Year!!! Hope that your Holidays were everything you wished them to be!!! 2016 is going to be an exciting year. January 2016 5 Good Morning JCI Senate Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season, apparently I missed the last deadline for the Filibuster; must have been busy packing up the apartment to join my husband at our new home in Kentucky. My updated contact information is: Address: 135 V Frank Rd. Russell Springs, KY 42642 E:mail: wklinge@duo-county.com Phone: (734) 323-1307 Update on Membership we just sent the 2nd quarter dues kit to National with 100% renewal and three new Senators; welcome to Nick Bessinger #74516, Chris Annis #74517, and Danielle La Fleur #74518 all from Muskegon. We also had one renewal from September, welcome back Tammy Fox #61006. This brings s membership to +5 for the year. If you think you know of someone who has been dropped for non-payment in the past, we can reinstate their membership for a $20.00 payment for the annual dues. Sometimes it is just a matter of reaching out to them; as they did not realize that they were dropped. The US JCI Senate has asked each state to promote the following request: A review of the Mentors mailing list has revealed that Mentors is currently being sent to 491 duplicate addresses each issue. In most cases, this is a husband and wife who are both senators. Each member is entitled to receive a copy of Mentors with their membership, but it is being requested that couples consider only receiving one copy at their address. So far, 94 duplicate addresses have been reduced to one copy. The intent is to reduce this number as much as possible. If you are receiving two Mentors at your household, and would like to only receive one, please send your authorization to gpitt1@comcast.net. BK and I plan to be back in for the Post Holiday Party and February meeting, hope to see you there. Happy Holidays, Wendy Klinge #60219 Treasurer $$$ 501C7 and IR$ Update $$$ In April 2014, at the Elections Meeting, the membership voted to pursue obtaining a 501c7 status with the IRS in order to conduct raffles. This new form of fund-raising would take the place of what we were going to lose at the Renaissance Festival Beer and Wine sales. During the application process, we also discovered that the EIN (employer identification number) that we had been using was incorrect. In November 2014, the paperwork was finalized and we received notification that made us a 501c7 (social organization). The last step was filing three years of back taxes, which Mike O Connell finished in early January 2015 (just before his passing). At the end of April of 2015 we received several letters from the IRS saying we owed penalties and interest for those three years which totaled $5,303.28. We immediately applied for abatement of all three years after speaking with the IRS several times and with some assistance from Nicole Sigler (wife of Tom Sigler #63595). The IRS initially waived the first year and recommended that we pay for those two years to avoid additional penalties and interest. This amount was just over $2400. The Senate issued a check to the IRS making us on good footing. UPDATE: The IRS has waived all back penalties and interest for years ending June 30 2012 and 2014. We were held accountable for the tax year ending June 30 2013 in the amount of $1,078.80. In closing, we would like to specifically thank Nicole for her guidance in handling our letter to the IRS. Please know that we are now filing annually with the IRS (thank you Edonna Russell #69002) to avoid future penalties and interest. I personally would also like to thank everyone for the help over the last year and a half to make this happen for the MI JCI Senate. Yours in Jaycee Spirit, Sue Foltin #63744 41st President, MI JCI Senate

6 FILIBUSTER, Issue 3, 2015-2016 JCI Senators, It is the time of the year when we are looking for current high school seniors who are interesting in financial support for their first year of college. Applications must come from high school students from States that have a US JCI Senate program and are U.S. Citizens graduating from U.S. accredited schools. This may include state approved home school and state approved GED programs, cyber schools, and overseas U.S. approved schools. The application is available at: http://usjcisenate.org/index.php/scholarship-program All JCI Senate applications are due to me by Friday, January 15th. Please mail all completed applications to Abby Smith at 7093 Pamela Drive, Ypsilanti MI 48197. The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials...the most money... or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most. continued from page 2 Mitten State. We are off and running on planning activities. Don Mcdurmon is our Chair and Gary Bulson is the Co Chair. We are still looking for some other Senators for the planning committee so if you are interested please contact either Don or Gary (or any E Board Member for more information). The event dates are September 15th-18th, 2016. We will be at the Auburn Hills Marriott Centerpoint and we already have some great activities in store for everyone!!! Once again, Thank You Scholarships 2015-16 ABBY SMITH #64378 JCI Senate for allowing me to represent you as your President! I look forward to the continued fun, excitement and leadership growth that I will experience over the next six months!!! The Past is behind us, Learn from it. The Future is ahead, Prepare for it. The Present is here, Live for it ~ Thomas S. Monson Respectfully Serving, Vette Sutton #69414 43rd President MI JCI Senate 2015-2016 Bases Loaded US JCI SENATE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Each year, the U.S. Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Foundation grants $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. The number of grants awarded annually is at the discretion of the Foundation and must be used for educational expenses in the first year of full-time study. Checks awarded will be made out in the name of the recipient and the educational institution of the recipient s choice. The Foundation is a fully qualified, IRS approved 501 (3) foundation. Our IRS tax ID Number is 38-2680101. All contributions to the Foundation are deductible for federal income and estate tax purposes. From September to November of each year, each JCI Senate state organization (or foundation) distributes to schools and boards of education throughout their state the necessary application forms for determination of the recipients of scholarship grants. The deadline for return of the completed application forms to MOST state chairperson is January 15, 2016. A panel of judges reviews each application received in each state and the two top ranked applications per state are forwarded to the U.S. JCI Senate Foundation. An outside, independent panel of educators reviews the applications submitted from the states and the winners of the scholarship grants are selected by that panel. No limit is set on the number of grant applications that can be submitted by students attending any given secondary educational institution. Although applications are judged at the state level first, eligibility is based on a student s state of residence rather than the location of the college, university, or vocational school the student plans to attend. Through 2014, the U.S. JCI Senate Foundation has awarded 300 grants totaling $315,000 The U.S. JCI Senate Foundation is proud of all of its award recipients and, with the continued support of JCI Senators in the United States and around the world, we look forward to making an even larger number of scholarships available.

January 2016 7 WELCOME, NEW SENATORS! Nick Bessinger #74516 Greater Muskegon Jaycees Chris Annis #74517 Greater Muskegon Jaycees Danielle LaFleur #74518 Greater Muskegon Jaycees Yes, I know I m your Vice President. But I m still from and if they ask me for an article, I ll write one. Probably won t be very good, but here it is. I ve been on the road for work, traveling to the new house, and for the Senate. I ve been able to combine some of these trips, and have visited other states and regions along the way. It is a pleasure to visit other areas and talk about what great things you are doing back home. I am proud to represent you and the other four states. At the National meeting in Hartford, our region was recognized for our ticket sales for the Presidential Raffle. Thanks to all of you, we are doing a great job helping the USJCI Senate to keep your dues and costs down. Also in Hartford, the editor of this great newsletter, Karen Hillegonds, was recognized for the wonderful job she does with it. We all know what a great newsletter it is, I m so glad CJ and her team saw this too. Great work, Karen! I ve been to s meeting in October. Loved seeing our Senators helping the Jaycees with their election and competitions. It s what we are all about. Keep up the good work! The Border Bash was a great time. Excellent turnout, great food and friendship. Jen Bruner and her team did a great job. I also attended the Border Bash between Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It was quite an evening. They have quite a unique trophy that goes to the loser. The Vice President for Region III, Art, couldn t make the meeting, so I was recruited to fill in for him. I thought I had eliminated all the recordings of my competition, but I understand some are still out there. I don t think John Robinson or myself will ever live it down. I am having a great time representing you and the rest of the region. I know what great work you do, and I make sure to let the rest of the country know it. Starting with Savannah in January, I will be on the road almost every weekend until the Spring Fling. A lot of travel, but worth every minute of it. I hope to see many of you in Savannah, or the next week at the Post Holiday Party. Speaking of the Spring Fling, please support Don and Gary and the rest of their team. Let s show everyone our great hospitality. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. I am here to serve you and the region, I m doing my best to make you proud. That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth s great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. - C.
