A New Movement Arises feminism- belief that women should have economic, political, & social equality w/ men movement reawakened spurred by political activism of the time jobs available to women- clerical, domestic service, retail, social work, teaching, nursing govt. commission in 63 reports women paid far less than men for the same jobs The Feminine Mystique written by Betty Friedan, it ignited the contemporary movement it captured the average women s discontent

Gains & Losses Civil Rights Act of 64 prohibited discrimination based on race, gender, religion National Org. for Women (NOW) - pursued feminist goals 1. Better child care facilities 2. Improved educational opportunities 3. End to job discrimination

Gains & Losses cont. Congress passed a ban on gender discrimination in educational programs receiving govt. $ (many all male colleges become coed) Roe v. Wade- 73 SC decision that allows right to choose an abortion during 1 st 3 months of pregnancy- issue still divides Americans today Equal Rights Amendment- proposed & failed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would have prohibited any govt. discrimination on the basis of sex Phyllis Schlafly conservative that believed the ERA would lead to women being drafted led pro-family movement which becomes the New Right (New Right helps get Ronald Regan elected)

Legacy movement transformed women s conventional roles & attitudes toward career & family it expanded career opportunities for women glass ceiling - invisible, but real resistance to promoting women into top positions

Culture marked by rock n roll, outrageous clothing, sexual expression, & illegal drugs hippies wore ragged jeans, tie-dyed shirts, & love beads many renounced private property to live in communes quitting school & jobs (ideas stem from utopian communities from the 1800 s- not original) Haight-Ashbury- hippie capital in San Francisco -allowed hallucinogenic drugs until 66

Decline peace & harmony give way to violence, crime, & disillusionment many fall victim to drug addiction & mental breakdown Janis Joplin & Jimi Hendrix both overdose in 1970, Jim Morrison in 71

Changes Andy Warhol attempted to bring pop art into the mainstream (bright, simple, commerciallooking images depicting everyday life) the Beatles- help mainstream rock music Woodstock- peaceful & well organized 3 day music and art festival in upstate NY in 8/69

Changes cont. American attitudes toward sexual behavior became more casual & permissive (some see as liberating, others as a sign of moral decay) Conservatives attack decadent values growing conservative movement helps elect Nixon
