On this series Towards the end of the 20 th century, ethnic conflict has emerged as the preeminent expression of violent conflict. Before we can explore ways, means and prospects of preventing ethnic conflict, we need to analyse the causes, genesis, course and outcome of conflict. When groups in conflict are defined simultaneously by ethnicity and religion, the conflicts between them appear to be exceptionally bitter and destructive. At the same time, it has been observed that religiously based tolerance can reduce the readiness to resort to violence. Hence, it appears appropriate to examine the impact of religious teachings on religion in practice and how this influences conflict behaviour. As a rule, sustainable regulation of ethnic conflict requires the agreement of a majority of each of the population groups involved in other words: democracy. This series of publications is intended as a collection of analyses of ethnic and ethno-religious conflicts in different countries within their particular context. Accordingly, the series will focus above all on empirical surveys of attitudes towards ethnicity, religion and democracy conducted with instruments that facilitate comparison.
