Number The papers of the United Automobile Workers-South East Michigan Community Action Program were placed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs in October of 1984 and were opened for research in April of 1988. UAW-SEMCAP was organized in 1970 as a means of integrating union activity with political and community action in a five county area (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, and Washtenaw). The administrative officers during the 1970-73 period consisted of the chairperson, Nelson Jack Edwards; vice-chair, Ken Morris; executive director, Willie W. Felder; and SEMCAP coordinator, Mike Kerwin. The purpose of SEMCAP was to engage in civic, welfare, educational, cultural, political, legislative and other activities designed to promote the interests of the workers and their families and the improvement of the economic, social and political conditions of society in general. The papers in this collection are predominantly the correspondence between the executive director, Willie Felder, and the other members of the administrative staff.
