GLOBAL ACADEMY OVERVIEW Established in 1829, the University of Cape Town is located in one of the world s most beautiful geographical landscapes. Its vibrant campus reflects the diversity of South Africa, with a dynamic, international community committed to being the best in Africa. The Global Academy programme is designed to inspire students to be global citizens by exposing them to new cultures, building connections across borders, challenging their perspectives and enabling them to develop a rich understanding of the world. Through their engagement and immersion with local communities, students reflect on their own society and their interconnectivity to the rest of the world while reflecting on the values of justice and social responsibility. The Global Academy courses present comprehensive insights into South African history, politics, culture, social justice and social entrepreneurship, and discuss major issues facing the country, continent and the world today.

AFROPOLITANISM Course description An overview of historical and contemporary contexts in South Africa, offering a timeline of significant events that have shaped South African politics, culture and society. The course connects the past to the present, touching on slavery, taking a journey into the history of San/Khoi dispossession at the Cape; colonialism (British and Dutch expansion in South Africa); apartheid and resistance; culture, heritage and citizenship; post-apartheid South Africa; South African music, art and poetry. Students will gain an understanding of the way history influences the character of Cape Town and South Africa, and develop insights into the current African context, opportunities and challenges of transformation.

SOCIAL JUSTICE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Course description An overview of social justice in the context of South Africa, looking into the root causes of injustices in society and examining concepts of wealth distribution, opportunities, resources and privileges. The course aims to help students develop an appreciation of the intersecting pressures on society that make social justice difficult to achieve, and to seek solutions within their own contexts. The course focuses on social justice activism; seeking social justice and solutions through entrepreneurial ideas, groups and organisations; innovation in the arts and social justice in Africa; social entrepreneurship. Excursions Visits to historical and heritage sites including Robben Island, sites of slavery in Cape Town; District Six Museum; centres of art and music, NGOs, social entrepreneurship sites, cultural sites, schools and community engagement projects.
