Ohio University Robert E. and Jean R. Mahn Center for Archives & Special Collections Daughters of Union Veterans Collection MSS# 53 OVERVIEW OF THE COLLECTION Author: Title: Unknown Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Collection Date: 1930-1965 Abstract: Quantity: Annual reports, general orders, reports on convention proceedings, minute books, constitution, by-laws, rosters, and two membership books 1.3 cu. ft. BIOGRAPHY OF The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 was organized on Memorial Day, May 30, 1885 in Massillon, Ohio, and was incorporated in Ohio on December 12, 1885. As of 1972, the society still maintained a national headquarters and museum in Springfield, Illinois. The museum, open on certain days to the public, contains many books, mementos, and documented records of the Civil War. The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 is organized in a majority of the States of the Union with a membership of about 20,000(1972). The society has furnished rooms in Soldier's homes, presented flags, erected monuments, established scholarships, and during World War II donated funds to the Red Cross for Disaster Units, supplied Emergency Kits, and Clubmobile Service. As quoted directly from the society's Constitution, its objectives are:

"To perpetuate the memory of our Fathers, their loyalty to the Union and their unselfish sacrifices for its preservation. To keep alive the history of those who participated in the heroic struggle for the maintenance of free government. To aid the descendants of Union Veterans of the Civil War. To assist those in our order who are worthy and needy. To cooperate in movements relating to veteran, civil, and welfare projects. To inculcate a love of country and patriotism. To promote equal rights and universal liberty. To assist the Grand Army of the Republic upon Memorial Day - - a duty doubly sacred now, as out Memorial Day belongs to the whole world and should ever be held sacred to the memory of all war heroes." Women who are lineal descendants of soldiers and sailors of the United States Army, Navy, or Marine Corps and Revenue Cutter Service who served between April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865 in the war for the Suppression of the Rebellion and of such State regiments as were called into active service and subject to the orders of the United States General Officers, between the dates mentioned, and have been honorably discharged there from are eligible for membership in the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865. SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION This collection contains materials covering a period of 35 years, 1930-1965.
