Part 2 UFW Information and Research Department Papers, 1951-1975 (Predominantly 1968-74) 23 linear feet 23 storage boxes The United Farm Workers (UFW) began as the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) in 1962. In 1966 the NFWA joined the Agricultural Workers Committee (AWC) to form the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFWOC), under the auspices of the AFL-CIO. In 1973 the UFWOC gained full union status and became the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO. Cesar Chavez led the farm workers from 1962 until his death in 1993. The Information and Research (I & R) department of the UFW serves as the research center for the Union, collecting materials of interest in many areas important to the organization. In addition, I & R collects the files of the various departments of the Union. Significant files in this collection include Service Center and Field Office correspondence. These materials reflect the range of services which the union provided for its members, including legal and immigration assistance, workman s compensation claims, and grievance mediation. Other important materials in this collection include papers concerning the difficulties the UFW had with the United Brotherhood of Teamsters relating to the 1973 dispute over sweetheart contracts that the Teamsters signed with many California growers. National Labor Relations Board reports about that dispute are also included herein. There are also a significant number of files relating to UFW membership: questions from membership as to how the Union worked, members Union histories, and other services the Union provided, including health care. Legal files constitute another important area in this collection, especially legal action versus various growers and companies, and files about illegal aliens. PLEASE NOTE: Folders are computer-arranged alphabetically in this finding aid, but may actually be dispersed throughout several boxes in the collection. Note carefully the box number for each folder heading.
