Important Instructions to the Applicants 4 1. Documents required: Following documents, a long with p hotocopies o f the r elevant pages, ar e to be s ubmitted along with the application form for obtaining PIO card. (a) Current UK (valid) passport to prove your foreign nationality in original Documents as evidence of Indian Origin (b) (c) Surrender of Indian Passport Certificate of applicant or of parents/grandparents. Photocopy of Indian Passport of applicant or of parents/grandparents. OR (d) Acknowledgement letter from British Home Office confirming possession of Indian passport in respect of applicant or of parents or of grandparents. OR (e) Domicile certificate issued by a State Government in India in favour of applicant or of parents/grand parents. If none o f t he a bove pr imary do cuments a re a vailable t o prove I ndian o rigin, t he following secondary documents may be adduc ed: birth c ertificate s howing place o f birth a s in India, educ ation cer tificates s uch a s matriculation certificate, voters identity card, ration card, income tax PAN card, employee identity card issued by Government o f I ndia or a S tate G overnment or a body incorporated in India, pr operty do cuments t o s how ownership of property in India etc. I t is relevant to mention that this is not exhaustive list of documents to prove applicant s I ndian origin. I t is a lso c larified that any s ingle do cument ot her t han Indian passport o r domicile certificate issued by a State Government in India can be accepted as sufficient proof of applicant s Indian origin. Therefore, applicant is advised to adduce as much secondary evidence as possible. OR A nativity certificate issued by the District Magistrate. Application form can be downloaded by clicking here. A nativity certificate should be certified in the prescribed manner and format. Please click here to download the certificate format.. The Consulate would entertain nativity certificate issued by village level officials such as a Sarpanch/Lambardar/Chowkidar and attested by a local Magistrate such as a T ehsildar pr ovided name, addr ess, contact telephone number and photos of the issuing and attesting officials are clearly available on the certificate. The photo of the applicant too should be affixed on the nativity certificate and attested by the certifying official. All applicants who are India born and/or held an Indian passport or are applying on the basis of parents/grand parents/great grand parents who were India born and/or held Indian passports compulsorily need to surrender their Indian passports and obtain a surrender certificate thereof. Production of such surrender certificate of Indian passport would be necessary before extending PIO card service. 2. Those applying as spouses of persons of Indian origin should submit original passport and PIO card of the spouse along with original marriage cer tificate along with two photocopies of eac h. I n such c ases t he marriage period should not be less than two years.

A self-addressed special delivery envelope may be submitted, in case the PIO Card is required to be sent by post. 6. Fee is required to be paid in cash or bank draft or postal Consulate General of India, Birmingham. Payment by cash is only accepted at the post. Credit/debit cards are also not accepted. 7. Fee for lost or damaged PIO card, where new PIO card is required to be issued, is 70.00. The applicant may need to be interviewed before a new PIO card is issued in lieu of the lost one. 9. Method of application: Completed applications a nd relevant do cuments can be s ubmitted in pe rson at the C onsulate between 09 30-1230 hours during any working day. Alternatively, the applications can be sent by post to The PIO Section, Consulate General of India, 20 Augusta Street, Jewellery Quarter, Hockley, Birmingham B18 6JL. Postal applications should be sent o nly by Royal Mail S pecial Delivery. For r eturn o f t he do cuments a nd P IO c ard, po stal applications s hould invariably be accompanied by a self-addressed Royal Mail special delivery envelope. 10. Processing Time: Processing of the applications normally take 18 working days in cases of applications received at the counter and 21 working days in case of applications received by post from the date of receipt of the application. Certain cases may take more time. 11. Benefits of PIO card: A PIO cardholder does not require a visa to visit India for 15 years from the date of issue of PIO card. He/she is e xempt f rom r egistration if his/her s tay do es not e xceed 6 months in India. When the s tay exceeds 6 months, he/she shall have to register within 30 days with the local FRRO/FRO. He/she shall enjoy parity with NRIs in respect of facilities available to the latter in economic, financial and educational fields, except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural/plantation properties. These facilities include a) Acquisition, holding, transfer and disposal of immovable properties in India. b) Admission of children in educational institutions in India under general category quota for NRIs, including medical and engineering colleges, IITs, IIMs etc. c) Various housing schemes of LIC of India, State Governments and other Government agencies. d) They can open bank accounts in India, which will be at par with rupee accounts. e) All future benefits that would be extended to NRIs would also be available to the PIO cardholders.
