The Israel factor in Syria: As Israel tries to counter Iranian influence, its capacity to shape outcomes in Syria is limited- Massive air raids that Israel carried out in Syria earlier this month against Iranian targets The Assad regime and Israel have never been friendly. 1967 war, Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria and continues to occupy the region. More than a decade later, Syria intervened in Lebanon. It then provided help to militants, mainly Hezbollah, who were resisting an Israeli occupation of the country.
- Iran backed Assad regime. Iran has also reportedly transferred short-range missiles and other sophisticated weapons to Hezbollah via Syria. In effect, Israel not only failed to contain the spread of Iranian influence in Syria, but is also under pressure to halt the advances of regime forces towards the south. In seven years, Iran has built a huge network in Syria and emboldened Hezbollah. This cannot be eliminated by occasional aerial raids.

NIA to chargesheet former Pak. diplomat- The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to chargesheet former Pakistan diplomat Amir Zubair Siddiqui, Counsellor (Visa) at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, in a case of conspiracy to attack vital establishments in India. The chargesheet will be filed at a special court for terror cases at Poonamallee near here on Thursday. The case relates to the arrest of Mohamed Zakir Hussain by the Q Branch CID of the Tamil Nadu police in 2013 here on specific information that he was indulging in spying activities as an agent of Pakistan.
Bench vs Bench in SC- In a rare show of public anguish, a three-judge Supreme Court Bench led by Justice Madan B. Lokur criticised another Bench for tinkering with judicial discipline. Justice Lokur s Bench, which includes Justices Kurian Joseph and Deepak Gupta, found fault with a judgment delivered by another Bench of three judges led by Justice Arun Mishra in a land acquisition case on February 8. Justice Mishra s Bench, on February 8, held that a 2014 judgment of the Supreme Court was pronounced without due regard to law or per incuriam.
Light transport plane Saras to be fast-tracked- The government will fast-track the revived light transport plane Saras towards production and begin the feasibility study for a 70-seater regional transport aircraft RTA-70, Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan said here on Wednesday. The improved 19-seater would be first produced for the Indian Air Force by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. The IAF has offered to buy 15 of them. Saras had been grounded in 2009 after an earlier prototype crashed and killed three crew members near Bengaluru. The project was revived last year.
Centre studying Lt. Governor s report- The Home Ministry said on Wednesday that it had received a report from Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. The report from Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal is under examination. Criminal aspects of the case are being taken care of by the Delhi Police, while the Home Ministry is looking into administrative issues like misbehaviour with a government servant, a spokesperson for the Ministry said.

NITI Aayog preparing new list of sick PSUs - NITI Aayog is working on a new list of sick and lossmaking Public Sector Units (PSUs) that could be privatised, said CEO Amitabh Kant. NITI Aayog has already given recommendations with regard to strategic disinvestment of 40 PSUs. Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) is working on it and the process is in an advanced stage, Mr. Kant said on Wednesday.
Centre reboots enam to draw more farmers - Adds BHIM link, regional languages In a bid to engage more farmers on the electronic National Agriculture Market (enam) platform, the government on Wednesday unveiled mobile payment facility BHIM, and other features in regional languages as well. The enam website is now available in Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and Odia besides Hindi and English, while the enam trading facility is available in six languages. We are gradually adding more features to enam to make it robust Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said.
Avani flies solo on fighter jet- Scripting history, Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi has become the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo, an IAF official said. Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo when she flew a MiG-21 Bison, the official said. She undertook the sortie from IAF s Jamnagar base on Monday.
