UNIT PLAN Grade Level: 5 Unit #: 3 Unit Name: Industrial Revolution Big Idea/Theme: New technologies and immigration impacted the Industrial Revolution. Culminating Assessment: Create a flip book that illustrates a key inventor/invention during this time to include: the hardships the inventor faced immigrating to America, the impact of the invention on the American economy, and reforms that might have resulted from this invention. (See attached instructions.) Notes: This culminating assessment can be counted for both writing and social studies. Integrate this project into writing and social studies instructional time. While students are only choosing one group for the culminating assessment, the written assessment covers ALL necessary information in the unwrapped standards. Unit Understanding(s) The students will understand that The Industrial Revolution developed rapidly as a result of new inventions and technologies. Inventors and inventions during this time changed American lives in important ways. Immigration and urbanization affected the American economy. Immigration provided a much needed workforce for the Industrial Revolution. Immigrants came to America for a variety of reasons. During the Industrial Revolution, America began shifting from and an agrarian to an industrial economy. Immigrants faced resistance from native-born Americans. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION FLIP BOOK CULMINATION ASSESSMENT Before the there was electricity, light bulbs, cars, airplanes, or even telephones, America was very different. We have been studying how some key inventions lead to a more modern America as we know it today. These inventions in combination with other things drew immigrants to America and helped America progress even faster. However, these changes did not come without its own set of problems which eventually lead to the Progressive Movement and Reforms. For this project you will be creating a flip book of a major inventor or invention that greatly impacted the Industrial Revolution. Each page will give different information about the invention and how it impacted America as well as how it might have created some new problems for America. Each of the pages should be illustrated and explained to show your understanding of the Industrial Revolution, Immigration and the Progressive Movement.
