Core units: Exemplar Year 10 Illustration 3: Refugee migration Refugee migration 2: Data analysis The global picture At the end of 2010, there were 43.7 million people forcibly displaced by persecution and conflict. Of these, 15.4 million were classified as refugees 10.55 million were refugees under the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and 4.82 million were Palestinian refugees under the care of the UN Relief and Works Agency. Another 27.5 million people were displaced within the boundaries of their own country and 837,478 people were seeking asylum. Refugees Of the 10.55 million refugees under UNHCR s mandate, 75% come from just 10 countries of origin Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burma, Colombia, Sudan, Vietnam, Eritrea and China. Only 10 countries host 62% of these refugees. They include Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Germany, Jordan, Kenya and Chad. Australia currently hosts 21,805 refugees (0.21% of the global total). Asylum seekers During 2010, 440,409 asylum seekers were recognised as refugees. The countries with the most of these recognised refugees were Kenya, Ethiopia, Syria, Malaysia, Congo (DRC), Yemen, United States, Liberia, Canada and Sudan. Just 3,859 (0.88%) of the world's asylum seekers, were recognised as refugees in Australia. At the end of 2010, 837,478 people were seeking asylum. The countries who received the most asylum applications were South Africa, Kenya, France, Germany, Ethiopia, Sweden, United States, United Kingdom, Belgium and Ecuador. Australia received 10,955 asylum applications (0.45% of the global total). 1
