Civic Virtue- do things for the common good of everyone. Democratic-Republican Ideals

Jefferson s Epitaph Why didn t Jefferson list the presidency on his gravestone? The items listed were what Thomas Jefferson believed were his gifts to the people. 1. He didn t list the presidency on his tombstone because he believed it was a gift from the people.

Louisiana Purchase Year? 1803 Over 900,000 square miles - nearly 600 million acres - were purchased for 15 million dollars (an average of only three cents an acre!).

The Trans-Appalachian West in 1800 (Before LP) The Trans-Appalachian West refers to the land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. U.S. territories using the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 applied for and became states. Kentucky-1792 Tennessee-1796 Ohio-1803

Why U.S. Needed Louisiana Merchants in the TAW found it too difficult to cross the Appalachian Mountains to get their goods on ships to sell overseas. They needed the Mississippi River and the Port of New Orleans. In 1762 France had ceded (given) what came to be called the Louisiana Territory to Spain in return for their help during the French and Indian wars. In 1800 Spain gave or sold the territory back to France because of pressure from Napoleon who wanted to set up colonies in America.

Why U.S. Needed Louisiana 2 1. So U.S. could move goods on the Mississippi River 2. And to store and ship goods from New Orleans French Control President Jefferson sent James Monroe to try to buy the Port of N.O. from the French

Why Napoleon Wanted To Sell Napoleon was fighting on several fronts and had some defeats. He decided not to start new colonies in America which might lead to war with U.S. 1. He needed money to fight his wars in Europe 2. Americans were moving west and he wanted to be rid of the land so he didn t have to defend it. Napoleon surprised Monroe by offering not just the Port but all the Louisiana Territory Monroe knew Napoleon could change his mind leaving the U.S. without the Port or the new territory. He was afraid to wait for Jefferson to decide. Monroe agreed to buy all the Louisiana Territory for $15 million

Jefferson s Problem 1. Jefferson was a Strict Constructionist and the Constitution did not give the President the power to purchase land. He would have to go against his own beliefs. Terms 1. $15 million 2. Doubled size of U.S. 3. We grew from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains

Effects The Louisiana Purchase has been described as the greatest real estate deal in history. The lands acquired stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border. 1. Thirteen states were carved from the Louisiana Territory. 2. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States, making it one of the largest nations in the world.
