Volume 13, Issue 7 Original Charter 1924 Reactivated 1994 August 2013 The President s Message By Chapter President Dale Ross Dear Gold Country Compatriots, Associates, and Friends, On June 29 th, Ron Barker and I attended an Eagle Court of Honor for Philip Cowdery in Placerville, CA. Philip is a new member of the Gold Country Chapter. I felt honored to be able to attend Philip s Eagle Court of Honor which was one of the best I have attended. The 4 th of July Parade in Grass Valley was a great success. The picnic was wonderful; and we had a chance to visit with Gordon and Jeannette Clark and their families. At the National Congress Gold Country Chapter s poster was displayed and received second place and will be displayed in Louisville, Kentucky at the National Society Sons of the American Revolution Headquarters for the next year. Congratulations to Anjalee Golden on her poster being awarded the second place at the National Congress. Anjalee did an outstanding poster (see page 9). Poster Contest Chairman David Gilliard presented Anjalee Golden her poster contest award from the National Congress at the August meeting. Her presentation was very informative. The Constitution Day Parade and picnic in Nevada City will be held September 8 th, 2013. We will meet at the Nevada County Government Building or the Rood Center at 12:30 p.m. Then we will ride the shuttle over to the parade route and march in the parade. Our car will be parked at the bottom of the parade route. After the parade we will come back to my house for a picnic and potluck. Please bring a dish to share at the picnic. August 2013 Page 3 A Revolutionary War Encampment will be held at Pioneer Park in Nevada City on Saturday, September 7 th, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday the exhibit will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. I encourage all of you to go to see the Revolutionary War Encampment to see how our ancestors lived during the Revolutionary War. ( http://gonevadacounty.com/2013/08/revolutionary-war-days-coming-to-nevada-city-onseptember-7-8/ ) On September 14 th, Sierra College in Grass Valley will host Day of the Young Child. My cell phone number is 530-263-2827. The address of the college is 250 Sierra College Drive, Grass Valley, CA. The time of the children s program is from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This program is for children of all ages. We welcome everybody to bring their children and grandchildren out to this activity. The Boy Scouts of America will have a booth there and I am going to be networking at the booth as well as handing out fliers for the chapter s Eagle Scout Program. Our Day of the Young Child activity will be making Pirate Hats and I welcome everybody to come out and join us for this activity. August 2013 Page 9 National News The 123 rd National Congress took place July 5 through July 10 th in Kansas City, Missouri. Our first place poster winner, Anjalee Golden, took second place in the national competition. Page 12 The Gold Country Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Minutes of the 17 th of August 2013 Meeting At Lou La Bonte s in Auburn By Compatriot Greg Hill The Gold Country Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Minutes of the August 17, 2013 Meeting at Lou La Bonte s Restaurant in Auburn, CA President Dale Ross presided over the meeting and called it to order at 9:04AM. Secretary Greg Hill was taking minutes. Opening: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Secretary Hill, Chaplain Barry Hopkins gave the Invocation, and Treasurer Dave Gilliard led the SAR Pledge. The following guests were introduced: Coreena Ross (DAR member and wife of President Ross), Gary Almquist (a prospective member), Carlisle Percival (Silicon Valley Chapter), The Golden Family (Family of award winner, Anjalee Golden), Mrs. London (Anjalee Golden s teacher) Guest Speaker: Teacher and History Enthusiast, Juli Longtin, the Guest Speaker, gave her presentation and slide show. She talked about an educational field trip to Boston museums, archives and historical sites like Plymouth Rock. At the conclusion of her presentation President Ross presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation. Award Presentation: California Poster Contest Chairman Gilliard presented an award and check to Anjalee Golden for her poster on the Declaration of Independence that won second place at the SAR National Society 5 th grade poster contest. She had previously received awards at the Gold Country Chapter and California State Society level. Old Business and Officer Reports: President Ross thanked those who attended the Camp Beckworth event. Mrs. Ross spoke about the program.

August 2013 Page 13 Treasurer Gilliard reported the account balances as $14,002.00 in savings, and $768.00 in checking. He then explained the hat charity collection that benefits A Touch of Home, a charity that sends care packages to service members over seas. The hat was passed around and $95 was collected. He also reminded members to visit Amazon through the Gold Country website. Purchases made after clicking on the Amazon ad benefit the chapter. President Ross spoke about the 4 th of July parade and thanked those who attended. Compatriot Alan Brooking reported on the Chapter nametags and presented possible options. Compatriot Ernie McPherson offered to take over the production of the nametags. Compatriot McPherson reported on the chapter merchandise sales. New Business and Announcements: President Ross discussed the Constitution Day Parade and Picnic, September 8 th. Meet at the Nevada County Govt. Building at 12:30pm. The parade starts at 2:00pm and there will be a potluck and picnic afterwards at the Ross s. Treasurer Gilliard talked about the Sierra College Constitution Day Event, September 17 th. Gold Country has reserved a table and our topic is Declaration of Independence (see page 8 of this newsletter for contact information). Mrs. Ross talked about Day of the Young Child in Grass Valley on September 14 th. It is a chance to promote our Chapter as well as programs such as our Eagle Scout scholarship. President Ross announced that there would be no regular meeting in September. There will be an informal meeting at the Constitution Day picnic. The agenda item for a guest speaker for October was delayed as Vice President Ron Barker may have a possible speaker but he was not present. President Ross gave a reminder of the upcoming California Board of Managers Meeting in Los Angeles this November first and second. Treasurer Gilliard, Secretary Hill and Compatriot Brooking received supplemental certificates, noting their newly documented descent from additional patriotic ancestors. Closing: Treasurer Gilliard made a motion to adjourn. The meeting adjourned at 10:02AM. California Society Past President Keith Bigbee led the recessional and Chaplain Hopkins gave the benediction.
