WHY? At the end of the Second World War, the whole Europe needed to be rebuilt. About 60 million people died: 20 million soldiers and 40 million civilians. People in Europe asked themselves: Can anything be done to stop these terrible things from happening again?" Will Europeans ever learn to work together instead of fighting each other?

THE AIMS AND KEY WORDS OF THE EU

STEPS The FIRST STEP 1945-1959 The process of building the European Union began after the Second World War. French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a plan for a European federation to maintain peaceful relations between peoples. In 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community(ECSC) begins to unite European countries economically and politically to secure lasting peace. (Treaty of Paris 1951) The six founding countries are Belgium France Germany Italy Luxembourg the Netherlands. In 1957, the Treaty of Rome creates the European Economic Community (EEC), or Common Market. What are the Italian equivalent of the following abbreviations? ECSC EEC EU

SECOND STEP 1970-1979 Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom join the European Union on 1 January 1973, raising the number of Member States to nine. THIRD STEP 1980-1989 In 1981, Greece becomes the 10th member of the EU, and Spain and Portugal follow five years later. In 1986 the Single European Act is signed. This is a treaty which provides the basis for a vast six-year programme aimed at sorting out the problems with the free flow of trade across EU borders and creates the Single Market On 9th November 1989, the Berlin Wall is pulled down and the border between East and West Germany is opened for the first time in 28 years. This leads to the reunification of Germany, when both East and West Germany are united in October 1990. FOURTH STEP1990-1999

In 1993 the Single Market is completed with the 'four freedoms' of: movement of goods, services, people and money The Maastricht Treaty (Netherlands) on European Union comes into force in 1993. MA ASTRICHT The Treaty of Amsterdam is signed in 1999: the UE sets itself the objective of maintaining and developing the Union as an area of freedom, security and justice. In 1995 Austria, Finland and Sweden join the UE. A small village in Luxembourg gives its name to the Schengen agreements (1985) that gradually allow people to travel without having their passports checked at the borders. Millions of young people study in other countries with EU support. Communication is made easier as more and more people start using mobile phones and the internet. SCHENGEN In 1997 employment and social protection policies were developed with treaty of Amsterdam.

FIFTH STEP 2000-today 11th September 2001 becomes synonymous with the 'War on Terror' after hijacked airliners are flown into buildings in New York and Washington. (The Twin Towers in NY collapsed). EU countries begin to work much more closely together to fight crime. New countries join the EU in 2004, followed by Bulgaria and Romania in 2007. Croatia becomes the 28th member of the EU in 2013. In 2016 UK leaves UE.(Brexit). In 2005 The EU created etwinning, an online community for schools in Europe which allows the European students and teachers to find partners and to collaborate on projects within a secure network and platform.

THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE EU The EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT represents all people in the EU. Every 5 years Its members are chosen in an election every five years. All adult citizens in the EU have the right to vote. The European Parliament has the power to legislate, along with the Council, and it is responsible for the political supervision of all the institutions. It sits in Strasbourg. STRASBOURG POWER TO LEGISLATE RESPONIBLE FOR THE SUPERVISION OF ALL THE INSTITUTIONS

In the EUROPEAN COUNCIL all the leaders of the EU countries (Presidents, Prime Ministers or Chancellors) get together to set Europe's general strategy. It makes final decisions on laws. The meetings of the European Council are usually held in Brussels. BRUSSELS PRESIDENTS AND PRIME MINISTERS SET GENERAL STRATEGY MAKE FINAL DECISION ON LAWS The European Commission is made up of 27 Commissioners, one from each member state. Their job is to think about what would be best for the EU. They propose laws and make sure that the EU treaties are respected. The European Commission represents the Union at international level and negotiates international agreements. It meets in Brussels. Formattato: Giustificato THEY PROPOSE LAWS 27 COMMISSIONERS ONE FROM EACH MEMEBER COUNTRY THEY NEGOTIATE INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS THEY MAKE SURE THAT EU TREATIES ARE RESPECTED

The Court of Justice makes sure that all EU countries stick to the laws that they have agreed upon. LUXEMBOURG The Court also checks that these laws respect 'fundamental rights', such as freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. It has judges from all the Union Countries. JUDGES FROM ALL THE UE STATES MAKE SURE ALL THE COUNTRIES STICK TO LAWS FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS :FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND PRESS, ARE RESPECTED The European Central Bank is responsible for maintaining price stability in the euro area. Its Headquarters is in Frankfurt (Germany) FRANKFURT PRICE STABILITY IN the EURO AREA

THE EURO Eliminato: + The euro is the currency of the UE. It s the most tangible proof of European integration, because it is used in 19 out of 27 EU countries. Not all EU members want to use it and some of them decided not to change their currency. These countries are collectively known as the Eurozone. Eurozone countries Austria France Latvia Portugal Belgium Germany Lithuania Slovakia Cyprus Greece Luxembourg Slovenia Estonia Ireland Malta Spain Finland Italy the Netherlands Croatia The benefits of the common currency are immediately obvious to anyone travelling abroad or shopping online on websites based in another EU country. At global level, the euro gives the EU more clout, as it is the second most important international currency after the US dollar. The official sign of the Euro looks like an E with two clearly marked horizontal bars across it. It was inspired by the Greek letter epsilon, a reference both to the place of European civilization and to the first letter of the word Europe. The two parallel lines represent the stability of the euro. There are seven Euro notes and eight Euro coins.
