JCC: Churchill s Cabinet The Very Short Study Guide Committee Director: Sarp Ögüt January 1942!1

Letter from Sir Winston Churchill Dear Sirs, With this letter, I would like to welcome you to this very preternaturally formed war cabinet against the utmost evils of the Axis. It will be my greatest pleasure to be accompanying you through the arduous process of commanding and combatting in order to defend the world. Throughout the rigorous meetings we will have during the day and at night, I doubtlessly believe that our decisions will lead us to win this war against the dictators damaging our prosperous order. Before getting down to the brass tacks of this study guide, it may be more convenient for us if I introduced myself. I am Sarp Ögüt, or Sir Churchill if you may. Currently, I am trying to deal with International Baccalaureate program in Eyüboğlu High School. For the past three years MUN has always been a great extracurricular that I enjoy, and for that matter I did attend various conferences both in and out of our country. With my abilities and experiences, I assure you that we will have the greatest fun and productivity while also winning this war. Frankly, I do not deem it necessary for us to have a boringly long study guide as my experiences have taught me that the amount of the study guide any delegate reads is inversely proportional to the length of the guide. Therefore, we are just going to define some key terms, state the major parties involved and look at a couple of maps in order to prepare you. However, I believe your experience and knowledge should be sufficient to perform you best under pressure. For this purpose, I decided not to limit your creativity by providing and influencing you with possible advices that I have beforehand, such as Mr Hitler does. With this being said, I promise that my guidance and help will be greatly beneficial during the committee sessions. Again, welcome to the cabinet which will save our world and try to enjoy it as much as you can, because I will when we win this war. Kind regards, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill!2

Introduction This cabinet starts in January 1942, just a month after the United States of America decides to join the war. Unfortunately, the Third Reich looks like the dominant power in continental Europe. With Hungary and Romania joining them in Balkans and Imperial Japan dominating its geographical advantage in the continent of Asia. London has been air raided a year ago by the Nazis and the Tripartite Pact is already signed. Axis looks strong to be honest. However, us the Allies have two great weapons in our hand: the resistance movements in invaded places across the Europe and a fresh player who is undoubtedly richer than the war-torn countries. Now is our time to deliver a massive punch to the evil Axis. Key Terms BATTLE OF BRITAIN An extended campaign from July 1940 to the spring of 1941 in which British air forces fought off wave after wave of German bombers and denied Germany in its quest to attain air superiority over Britain. Although major cities in England sustained heavy damage, the British resistance forced Germany to abandon its plans to invade across the English Channel. BLITZKRIEG Literally lightning war, the term for Hitler s invasion strategy of attacking a nation suddenly and with overwhelming force. Hitler applied the blitzkrieg strategy, with varying degrees of success, to the German invasions of Poland, France, and the Soviet Union. LEBENSRAUM Literally living space, Adolf Hitler s justification for Germany s aggressive territorial conquests in the late 1930s. Based on the work of a previous German ethnographer, Hitler used the idea of lebensraum to claim that the German people s natural territory extended beyond the current borders of Germany and that Germany therefore needed to acquire additional territory in Europe.!3

LEND LEASE ACT Proposed in late 1940 and passed in March 1941, the Lend-Lease Act was the principal means for providing U.S. military aid to foreign nations during World War II. It authorised the president to transfer arms or any other defence materials for which Congress appropriated money to the government of any country whose defence the President deems vital to the defence of the US. UNRESTRICTED SUBMARINE WARFARE Unrestricted submarine warfare is an approach where submarines get to sink merchant ships without warning. The use of unrestricted submarine warfare was announced by Germany on January 9th, 1917. The use of unrestricted submarine warfare was to have a major impact on World War One as it was one of the main reasons why America joined the war. Major Parties Involved THIRD REICH The Greater German Empire is currently the a major leader of the war effort in the European Theatre. The Third Reich is also the member of the Rome-Berlin Axis, and the consequent Pact of Steel. Adolf Hitler, the Führer, is determined to establish a New World Order, in which he aims to destroy all of our values. IMPERIAL JAPAN The Empire of Japan is not actively engaged on the European Theatre, however it is the sole representative of the Axis in the Far East. Defeating Japan would open us a way which we can benefit from our mandates in Asia and supply the necessities from them for winning the war in continental Europe. ITALY Fascist Italy, the co-founder of the Rome-Berlin Axis, is a major regional power in the European Theatre. Italy participates with expeditionary forces in North Africa and the Eastern Front. It lacks the resources to effectively propagate the war for long, so it will be easy for us to outplay them in a short amount of time.!4

THE UNITED KINGDOM Even if the realm is not having the strongest days, it would be absurd to say that Sir Winston Churchill being on the front page again has increased the hopes of the Islands. There are no current threats to the UK, however it is their utmost duty to bring peace and harmony to world again and the plan is doing this by gaining power of the mandates and colonies in Asia again. SOVIET UNION The USSR might be looking a little bit of weak after the invasion, but that just is the cover of the book. They have an unmatchable human capital and a brutal weapon called as winter. There is no way the Axis beats them during this time of the year, and even in the future they are yet to find the necessary resources to fully invade the glorious Ally. Moreover, their economy is still strong and they do have a fair bit of influence over the Balkans and central European states. THE UNITED STATED OF AMERICA The United States of America is very new participant in the war, but is the one the Axis fears the most. The country of freedom and democracy fighting against dictatorship is yet to prove that they will do their fair share of this war, however the potential they have on changing the future of cannot even be disputed. They will be the greatest help for Allies while fighting in the Far East across the ocean.
